Monkey Business

My previous posts was about the balancing act between humans and animals regarding their territory. That was the migratory birds , this one concerns monkeys. My part of the country is known for its forest cover .That is fast disappearing due to infrastructure development. So these simians are no longer a part of the wild . So, there they are, descending down in hordes in many places. While they come searching for food, they are also a nuisance as they destroy plants and also get into houses. They are very intelligent and they ape(pun intended) human behavior. They take away clothes from the clothes line and drape them around their bodies ,and make fun of the people from a safe distance. I have seen them open the fridge door and carry off eggs and milk cartons. On hot days when they are thirsty and they want a drink of water, they just turn on the tap and have a drink. It’s a different matter that they do not close the tap after use.!! Do you have any wild animals straying into your homes and gardens? The photo is one my neighbour took when they had gone to a nearby temple, there were lots of monkeys around.

The monkeys can look cute to those who do not have them in their countries, but I am sure they are a serious nuisance. We have only wild boars that can make serious damages.

@responsiveme The baby boars are cute, but it's better not to approach them because their moms are not funny.

Yes, the antics are cute for those who see them occasionally but for those having to live with them its a nuisance. I remember your picture of the wild boars running through the town.

That is amazing! I've only heard about them doing that. I've also heard that the cute koalas in Australia are becoming a nuisance. We have a problem with bears, deer, and coyotes.

Yes, cute is only if we see them once in a while....not regularly. Bears sound scary.

No, no wild animals in my yard. I am not comfortable with wild animals, knowing they are wild and can hurt anyone at any given time.

@responsiveme I know a monkey who suddenly went wild and bit the child of his master. How sad!

The only wild things here are raccoons, deer, coyote, rabbits. The coyotes are very dangerous, so we prefer these to stay away. The other animals do eat from the garden, so we have to plant things around the edge to keep them happy or away.

So you have to plant enough for you and them. We used to hear jackals long time ago, not anymore.

My comment here seems to have disappeared. I said that they must be a real nuisance, and that all we have to contend with here are those pesky squirrels.

@responsiveme They dig up the lawn burying things, then dig it up again looking for them, And they dig bulbs out of pots.

They are a nuisance all right. Thankfully the roam about and so visit some days . The pesky squirrels don't harm your flowers ,do they?

I know they are becoming a real nuisance in some areas. As you say, they are very clever and if they are determined to get into a house it would be difficult to keep them out.

Yes, thats why my parents are very conscious about keeping the doors and windows closed.because once they get in its a lot of work to clear up after them.

We do not have much monkey roaming around freely over here. But yes it might be because of the lucrative monkey business. The monkeys in my country are unfortunately sold to European countries to conduct laboratory experiments on them

There should be a way to keep animals out of the houses. If they are too many, maybe people should do something to stop their growing.

The only wild animals we have that can be a nuisance are fairly little. Squirrels, chipmunks and sometimes stray kittens. We will get a small, fat animal that waddles. I can't think of the name of them right now, but I steer clear when they are about. Not because they are dangerous. They may be, I don't really know what they'd do if approached and I'm not going to find out. I usually see them after dusk and at that time I'm certainly not going to observe them close up. Those are possums, we also have raccoons that get into our garbage from time to time. Our outlying areas hear cougars and other larger type cats although I don't know if they come close enough to be spotted or not. Deer will be found in town once in a great while and bears are in our state but I don't where all they've been.

We have a few wild animals but none that can turn on the water tap. I loved seeing the monkeys in a zoo near by when I was a kid, but now as an adult I know that is not a good thing for the poor animals.

Monkeys have lots of human characteristics. They are a nuisance when they come down in troops but then it's the humans who are cutting up the forest s and building structures....So where are they to go?

India has many Gods and I've heard that among one of them is a monkey god which some religious sect worship and venerate. Is this the same figure as the Chinese monkey king Sun Wukong?

The God here you must be talking about is "Hanuman".I don't think there is any connection with the Chinese monkey king. But that is a reason why people don't shoot to kill those monkeys , rather they try to scare them away.

No, that has been tried...they come back. :) In any case the forest cover is disappearing because of development...that is building houses and roads.

Their antics are cute to us who see them occasionally. My parents face this problem and they don't find it funny. Worst is they destroy the plants. The lime trees are those that thrive because of the thorns.
