Have You Ever Been Prescribed Oxycodone (OxyContin)?

Years ago my regular dentist referred me to a specialist. After the specialist worked on my teeth he prescribed oxycodone. “Isn’t this the stuff people are getting addicted to?” I asked him. “Oh,” he said, “you’re not going to get addicted to it.” He sounded annoyed I even brought the subject up. I went to the pharmacy and picked up the prescription. I can’t remember how many tablets there were but I’m thinking twenty–enough for two weeks. Over the next two days I took one tablet a day then did not want anymore. So I did not get addicted to them. But here’s my question. With so many people getting hooked on oxycodone and later cocaine, how did this dentist know I wouldn’t get hooked on it? He wasn’t my regular dentist and I had only seen him a couple of times. My brother had a friend who went to jail because he held up a pharmacy demanding oxycodone. He had had back surgery and the doctor prescribed it. He had also started stealing things to pay for his habit. He is now out of jail, off oxycodone and doing fairly well. Now days there are people who no one would ever think would touch drugs who are now addicted to cocaine after being prescribed oxycodone. And many of these people are dying from overdoses. Every now and then I find myself wondering what my life would be like if I had gotten addicted. Would I be shooting up cocaine right now? Would I be in jail? Would I even still be alive? There is a drug that can be given for an overdose, but not everyone is found in time.

My son had knee surgery when he was 17. It was day surgery and when he left the doctor gave him a prescription for oxytcotin. There was a months worth and he was told he take it when he was in pain. He was in a lot of pain. He took one and he said he didn't like how it made him feel. He said he was still feel the pain but it was just made him feel out of it. He didn't like that feeling. He never took another one. That was before we started hearing so much about people getting addicted. That could have sent him in a bad road at such a young age.

That is scary really. Through no fault of his own it could have had a very bad outcome.

@JudyEv Yes very true! At that time I didn't know so much about it and it was readily prescribed.

@Happy2BeMe No mother would be expecting her doctor to prescribe an addictive substance to her son. Patients shouldn't have to be continually on their guard for such stupid behaviour.

It's been a long time since I've had any prescription for anything. But my daughter has had a few with some coughing problems she had in the past. The last one a couple years ago had something in it (can't remember what it was now) but I had a heck of a time trying to get it. I had to go to 3-4 different pharmacies to get it because they all did not carry any more of it (apparently there was a limited stock on hand, and it was locked up - had to be opened up by the supervisor). And the very last pharmacy, the pharmacist is the one who gave me the extra warning about it. She said this stuff was strong, especially on young kids, and highly addictive. I told her how I had a problem getting it at other pharmacies and she said yah, because they are getting addicts who demand it and will steal it! Well, I'm not one for medicines . . . but I had her try it out. For one, it tasted completely disgusting to her that it nearly made her gag, so she wasn't going to go beyond another disgusting dose of it. And then she magically got better from that day on anyway. Drub addiction is horrible . . . and not good when it started with a prescription!

@RichardMeister Hubby seems to think I did say codeine at the time. And I do remember the pharmacist telling me not to give her the full dosage if at all possible.

@much2say I just looked it up and it said that it is not recommended to be given to children under 13. It also somewhat suggest that it really shouldn't be given for cough but in Europe it is believe it does reduce coughing and is given to adult there.

I wouldn't know what that would be but glad your daughter didn't get hooked on it. Yeah, getting addicted started by a prescription isn't good.

I've used it a couple of times, but I didn't like the way it made me feel.

Wow. I haven/t had it - my dad has though. He was on it for years for chronic pain. No issues. Until last year. Started acting out of it. Just loopy. Crazy. I really seriously thought he had dementia. He personality was gone. No. His body had changed and he wasn't metabolizing the meds right. He was over medicated on that. It took them like 2 months to figure that out
