I didn't know this and just heard it on Jeopardy. Iris is the goddess of rainbows, a messenger of the gods. Often depicted as a hand maiden. The rainbow of colors the Iris flower has is why it has that name. How would you like a title like 'Messenger of the Gods'?

My former neighbor a few homes ago had iris beds on two sides of her home - they were about 5 feet deep and ran the length of the house....they were huge and the work that lady put into them was more work than I ever want to do. She spend hours and hours once the blooms were gone. I have not seen any other iris beds except for hers.

That sounds huge. My mom just put different colors all around the border of the yard.

@celticeagle It was huge and all flowers were purple....I think if she had a variety of colors it would have been more impressive.

@celticeagle This lady was a tad on the bonkers side....we lived in a small sub-division high on a hill the only traffic the 6 families who lived there...yet she had her yard looking like House and Garden magazine and she worked 8-10 hours a day on it. Never sat and enjoyed it.

I have a few iris, and I do love them. They are @marsha32 's favorite flower, I believe. Especially the yellow ones.

Irises are my absolute favorite. I love to grow them as they are easy to maintain and they come back from year to year without much effort on my part.
I started with one yellow bulb that my daughter gave me for my birthday 16 years ago. Since then I've gotten some bulbs from someone on freecycle, a friend gave me some, and I even bought a few different ones at the Iris show.

They are lovely. There some very pretty colors. I like the rootbeer color, periwinkle blue and a purple two tone. Lovely.

How about it? I think the purple one is very pretty. The one mom had was two tones of purple. Very striking.

@celticeagle I love them at the beginning stages of blooming - when they're not quite open yet.

I did not know that either. I don't think I'd want the titel of "Messenger of the Gods" or the responsibilities it intends.
