Drat, my fence has collapsed

I have a fence and gate that separates the driveway from the rear garden. The fence has been there since the house was built in 1999 and was definitely beginning to show wear and tear, but at least it was intact and served its purpose well. During the recent strong winds that we have experienced, the whole fence and gate have virtually collapsed. They are leaning at an angle of around 45 degrees and the gate latch is totally destroyed. The fence will now have to be completely replaced. My biggest concern now is trying to find the right company to provide this service. Apart from the price I am concerned about finding a reliable company or workman to do the job. I could certainly have done without this kind of problem.

My major problem with the fence is knowing who to contact in respect of the work. It needs completely replacing, but I do not want to approach an unreliable contractor.

@Asylum A friend or neighbour might be able to suggest a reliable company to you?

Good luck with finding someone reliable. You don't mind paying if you know you're going to get a good job done but that's getting more and more rare these days. Maybe one of the trusted trader type websites may be of help.

Sorry to hear about your fence Barry, the wind was strong last night and it still blowing here now, with heavy showers at times. I hope you are feeling somewhat better today, don't worry too much about the fence, we or I am more worried about your heath.

The fence is currently my priority because it certainly has to be replaced soon. I have no wish to leave damaged property to my family.

I am sorry Barry and now I feel concerned too, our fence was built in 1999 too. It's hard to find a reliable contractor in our days. Good luck.

@Asylum I know, when something like this happens, we have no choice. Do you plan to place a new wooden fence or something different? If our wooden fence should break, I would go with the new aluminium fence panels, they last longer, they are less heavy and a good solution.

The wind has destroyed many a fence in our area. We don't have much fencing...the little we have is in the trees. It is more likely to be damaged by falling trees than the wind. Hopefully you can find a reliable, economical solution to your falling fence.

The fence was already old and dilapidated so a completely new fence and gate would be required.

@Morleyhunt Very true, but my bank account may not be so pleased about it.

@Asylum First of all, the question of : Do you want the same fence? Upgrade? New color only? Secondly the issue of who to install it. That isn't something we have to choose often. A rickety, poorly installed fence is a worry.

The price is certainly a worry when having home repairs done but I have found it hard to even get anyone to come give me estimates. It took me two years of waiting and asking 6 different carpenters before I got someone to install replacement windows in my daughter's room.

The price is a secondary concern to the problem of employing someone who provides a poor job.

@Asylum our windows are almost all old. I replaced two of my daughter's windows which aren't as old for about $700. The other older windows they were going to charge $900 to do one as they assumed the windows had lead paint. I'd rather go with a less expensive person and save $550 per window in this case.

The right person to do the job is important when we get any work done. Is the fence a necessity? Could you just remove the old fence and do without a fence?

It is such a hassle encountering this problem !You might as well inquire of your neighbours about the reliable company or workman to do it,lest you should come across a dodgy one.
