Many of us would want to keep our homes clean by using home cleaners that are tough on dirt and bacteria. However, some of these 'tough' cleaners may actually contain chemicals that are harmful to humans and animals.
It's a personal concern in my household, so whenever possible I purchase cleaners that are generally kind to living things and to the environment. Here are some tips:
* Use biodegradable soaps and detergents - These days many cleaning products are made of biodegradable ingredients. You can easily find the listing on labels.
* Go for plant-based solvents and ammonia-free glass cleaners. - The Bio-Solv brand for example has successfully replaced petroleum based solvents with the greener kind. Ammonia-free glass cleaners will not damage the backing of your mirror.
* Avoid cleaners that contain chlorine. Too much exposure to chlorine has been linked to major health problems (CDC has an info page on their site).
Some manufacturers do not fully disclose the ingredients on a product label. Choose a brand that you can trust. Ask friends for recommendations or read reviews on the Internet.
Happy cleaning!

Yup. Baking soda is one of my best friends in the kitchen as I use it to deodorize and to clean surfaces.
