Day 5 | or Fifth Day After Surgery

I went to get my assessment with the physical therapist this morning and will begin my actual therapy which includes exercises this coming Monday. During the assessment I discovered that I'm doing better than I thought. Even though I begin each day with tight muscles I must be getting them stretched more than I think.
She had me lay down on a table to check the extension of the surgical leg. The first day of therapy while still in the hospital it started at 9 degrees with the goal being zero. I've not had full extension in that leg for about twenty or so years. By the time I left the hospital, at the last PT class it got down to 5.
Today it was down to four. The other measurement we're keeping track of is the angle of my leg while sitting. The current goal, after surgery, is 90 degrees.
The first day it was at 70 at the beginning of class. By the end of class it was 73, and by Wednesday prior to my discharge it got up to 80 or maybe 85. Today, at least it was still at 85.
Their goal, like I said is for us to get up to ninety. My goal is higher to make it easier to get in and out of cars and to use the restrooms when the toilet is too close to a wall, tub, or something else. I found out the ultimate goal (for life) is 120 degrees and my non-surgical leg is above that number.
I have much more to share about today but will do so in another discussion.
For those of you still needing knee replacements do you know where you are on the degree scale? And, I guess the question would work for those never needing knee replacement surgery.

Image is mine taken Oct 16. The cactus has nothing to do with this post, but this cactus is blooming again right now, and I wanted to show it off.

Will reply to this later. I'd have to check what those exercises are to know for sure. I do one where I push my knee against the surface I'm on and release it. Then do it for twenty reps. I'm not sure what the other one is.

@MarshaMusselman I think you should be able to bend them enough to feel comfortable soon.

@LadyDuck It could take another week or so to be fully comfortable wherever my legs are at the time. Tomorrow I get the staples out and another patient said it's so much better once those are removed. I still feel discomfort at the area where the new pieces were inserted and possibly were it meets the muscle, but i learned from the physical therapist that stretching that area is good and when I continue to bend the knee just a tad more than i had it before then the next time it doesn't hurt so much at that same bend.

I babied that knee so long ago, I don't remember what precipitated the babying. As a result, that knee was always swollen looking and I couldn't get it to be a straight as the other one was. Now they are even in that regard.

@MarshaMusselman ha ha wow that is about as bad as me. In the summer I tend to forget about them because I put them out on out enclosed back porch. I have a tendency with everything where if it is out of site it is out of mind. I have killed cactuses which need very little water. These need water at least once a week these zygot cactuses.

Mine used to bloom twice a year but I had a year or two that it didn't bloom at all. Probably due to forgetting to water it. It was lucky if it got water monthly. I'm doing better now.

I have no idea how long it might take to meet my goals, but the way I'm going it may happen sooner than I thought at first. At least I know know that I didn't need to 'be there' before leaving the hospital as I thought at first.
I've been told by the doctor that performed the surgery and friends here and elsewhere that have had the surgery not to overdo it yet no one ever said in the beginning on how close we were expected to get. I probably did overdo it the first full day after surgery.

I like the photo of the cactus in bloom. Hopefully you are progressing very well and you will soon be back to disco dancing and doing the Can Can.

When my cousin mentioned me being able to polka again, I almost told her she was pushing things a bit too far. But oddly enough even though it's recommended we not run nor do downhill skiing, it doesn't say anything against dancing. My mom had both hips and both knees done over several years time and continued to dance until her eyes got worse.

Sounds like you're on the mend. Time is a great healer and I'm sure the Physiotherapy will help you.
My range of Mothion has not been tested but I pretty agile. It is getting harder to get up and down from the floor when I'm playing with the grandkids, but nothing that has concerned me.

The only way I could get off the floor before was if I had a folding chair so I could kneel in front of it and boost myself off the floor.

So glad it is going well for you. I have no problem doing those things that you discuss so I guess I am in the normal range.
