Day 181 Proverbs 18:22 Proverbs 18:22 Whoso finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor of the LORD. A few weeks ago, in church I heard the divorce rate was going down and the reason is because fewer people are getting married. Solomon does like to get controversial at times. It might not have been a controversial issue back then, but it is now. I’m old fashioned. I believe in marriage, not living with someone outside the bonds of matrimony. One reason for that is the way I was brought up. Everyone I knew was married and grownups expected that when I grew up I would marry as well. Divorce in my family was unheard of. My parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles all had long marriages. Did I enforce those same values on my children? I wish I could have, but I didn’t. My daughter lived with her husband for 14 years before they married, and my sons still aren’t married, and I have grandchildren from all of them. Solomon said finding a wife was a good thing, and you obtained favor from God. Until recently even the government gave credit to married couples – married being a man and a woman. In recent years, all that has changed. Why wouldn’t a person want God’s favor and blessing on their lives? Why would they want to live with someone, not knowing how long the relationship would last, and not deriving any benefits from being married? The world is full of single parents and dead beat fathers. Probably the same can be said about mothers as well. Some mothers just aren’t good mothers. Inside a marriage, children have two parents to care for them and see to all their needs. When there is love between the parents, they aren’t going to be so quick to head to the courthouse and get a divorce. God blesses the union between a man and woman when that marriage is formed on a triangle, with God at the center of the marriage. Not all marriages are formed on that triangle, and a lot of problems ensue, and the couple ends up in divorce court with unreconcilable circumstances. Not all couples who don’t form their marriage on that triangle end up in divorce court. Some determine to make their marriage work for better or worse, instead of running out when it gets worse. My marriage was not formed on that triangle. It was also a loveless marriage, so the difficulties we had, did end up in divorce court after 21 years. I was determined to make it work, he wasn’t. The views I’m expressing in this study are my views, gleaned from what God’s Word says about marriage, and what I experienced first-hand. Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. (KJV) Mark 10:6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; 8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. 9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. (KJV) God is the author of marriage. What he ordains, he also blesses. Whether you are living with someone, married, or in any other kind of relationship, I will not judge you.
