The Camping Trip That Wasn't

My missus and I left on our camping trip this afternoon as soon as I got home from school. An hour later we were at our campsite. Ten minutes later we realized we had a problem. Only one side of our slide out slid out. The other side didn't move a bit. And then there was the smell of burning rubber. Fortunately we were there with our camping club and they were able help us get the slide out slid back in. Unfortunately, the malfunction meant we would not be able to stay. Both my missus and I are disappointed at missing the camp out, and concerned at what the cost of fixing whatever is wrong with the camper might be, but considering the cold and possibility of snow, maybe it is a blessing in disguise. Either way, we'll be home this weekend instead of camping. How's your weekend shaping up so far?

@DWDavis NEVER! I have a small pile of trash that was left so I will pick it up and put as much in my weekly can as possible.

What a shame that you missed out on your camping weekend. Hope the malfunction isn't a costly repair. Nothing planned here for the weekend except the usual chores

It is disappointing as we were both looking forward to a couple days away from home and chores.

I'm sorry you missed camping but as you said it could be a blessing in disguise. That's how I felt when we had a flat tire the other day. I hope it won't cost too much to fix and I hope you get to go camping soon! =)

@DWDavis I'm sorry that's probably going to feel like a lifetime to y'all without your camper. I hope you enjoy your dinner there though.

@LovingMyBabies Dinner should be enjoyable. The folks in the club are a fun bunch to spend time with.

Thanks. We were very disappointed, too. The good news is the campground is close enough we can go back and have dinner with the club tonight. The bad news is it may be two weeks or longer before we get our camper back.

Sorry that happened to you. We are having a cold snap and all of a sudden yesterday, they are predicting we could get a little snow in the morning. I am betting if it happens, it wont be much snow and it wont stick since it has been warm.

@DWDavis Yes, I am hoping it is not much. Getting more than an inch here, causes a panic among the people.

@LeaPea2417 I can just picture the mad rush on milk and bread around here this morning as the first flakes started falling.

@AbbyGreenhill You could say that. Served its purpose, though. We found out we had a problem and we weren't hundreds of miles from home.

Oh that is too bad. Good thing you found out only and hour from home. We usually take our little trailer to a very near by campsite at the beginning of the season, just to check if there are any new kinks!

@DWDavis Last year a small town nearby had a deal to camp and golf. It is a 20 minute drive and where we go to the doctor. Not any kind of destination really. But we sat out by our trailer and cooked our camp meal and got up and golfed in the morning. I drove the trailer there and even tried parking it before my husband arrived on his motor bike. I brought my bicycle and rode on the town's nature trail too. A great little vacation. And my husband discovered something that had to be fixed in the water heater.

Do you have a way to heat the camper on nights where it does get colder? Sorry to hear your plans for the weekend weren't able to go as planned. I hope whatever is wrong with it that it won't cost to much to fix.

We do have a propane furnace in the camper, but after the malfunction, we weren't comfortable staying the night inside until after we get it checked out to make sure all systems are working properly.

We think whatever caused the suspected short circuit happened as we were traveling to the campground. I'm just glad, if it had to happen, it happened close to home.

We are just glad it happened on a trip less than an hour from home. If it had waited to happen two weeks from now we'd have been more than twice as far, and without the company of our camping club friends.

Sorry your trip got messed up. Will you get to go another time when you get your camper fixed? We're planning to celebrate our anniversary (51years!), going out to eat tomorrow night, then grilling steaks on Sunday night.

We just dropped it off at the shop. It may be two weeks or more before we can get it back. They are so busy setting up the campers they sold at the RV show last month.

This morñing we went to Pilot mountain. It was too windy to spend much time there. We had the presidential tour of Horne Creek Hostorical Farm. I would recommend that tour.

Aww poo! I was actually thinking of you last night. I went grocery shopping after work, and it was bitter cold and brutal wind.. and all of a sudden out of nowhere we had a white out blizzard! Couldn't see a thing while driving from one store to another. Then I started thinking "I thought we weren't getting snow until Sunday" Then I remembered it was here that I'd heard about snow on Sunday... in your post, which obviously has no bearing to what our weather will be here, but it reminded me that you were camping and I wondered how your weather was last night..

After crawling around inside and under the camper last night, my hip is punishing me this morning. One look at my face after I came down the stairs and my wife told me I wasn't doing anything but staying off my feet today.

If the problem is what the shop owner thinks it is, it shouldn't be too bad. But they won't know until they get in there and have a look. Fingers crossed.

What was causing the burniing smell? does it have a motor to operate it. I am guess this is not just a tent, but part of the vehicle.

We have a travel trailer. The burning smell may have come from a fuse that is designed to burn out when there is too much stress on the motor, so the motor itself doesn't burn out. We were tent campers for a long time and moved up to RV's three years ago.

It is all part of the RVing adventure. We had lots of people rally to our aid at the campground, and were lucky enough some of them had incurred the same problem and knew what to do to fix things enough for us to be able to get the camper home.
