Trying to Help

My granddaughter has always had a dry cough. She is not sick, but she gets embarrassed because people think she is. The doctor told her this year that it is allergies and to take an antihistamine.
Her mom does not want her to have to always take pills.
So I knew I had read information about calming coughs with herbs, and I looked it up.
I found that thyme is recommended for coughs and to be used as an antihistamine. Just use the leaves and make a tea, and sip it.
This may be one of the best things I have learned. I made some thyme tea for me.I have been sipping it this afternoon. I feel great. I am able to breathe and not cough at all. My sinuses are even clear.
So we have one more natural method to deal with our persistent coughs and colds. It tastes good, too.

I like it. What I read said to take a spoonful, add boiling water and steep for ten minutes, strain and drink. Some people put honey or other sweeteners, but I did not. @Hatley, you may want to check with your doctor, or not. I think it is healthier than long term benadryl use, but I am not a doctor.

she can also try a spoonful of local honey each day (HAS to be local, and I mean like in that neighborhood, not just same state), helps with whatever the things in her area set off her alliergies. Try local farmers markets, see if anyone near keeps bees

Well, that would be great for outdoor allergies, and my daughter knows this. I think this may be dust or mold or whatever indoors. You can also sweeten this with honey. I suggested the honey and lemon juice. Daughter did point out that she would have to source some local honey.

@Jessicalynnt They have taken out all the carpets about three years ago in the upstairs. Downstairs basement needs the carpet for warmth in the family room.

@GardenGerty yeah, finding something that doesnt just "say" local (which can mean same state but not really be local), that IS actually local can help. Things like having your vents cleaned professionally once a year, getting rid of carpets, etc can help too

I had looked in my pantry and there were two containers. I had put it in the meatloaf yesterday and that was delicious too. The bees will love you for planting it for them too. I love herbs.

My g'mother agrees. Many are against using food and natural products to keep themselves healthy. Why? Using thyme will have no side issues, but antihistamines could.

I agree and I hope my granddaughter (11 years old) will give it a try. My daughter keeps ice cubes made of ginger for stomach troubles and the kids get one or two in a cup of juice, or sometimes they get it for colds as well. I wonder if thyme cubes would be good for them.

@PatZAnthony In June 2015 we arrived to babysit the kiddoes for a week while mom and dad celebrated their anniversary. The then three year old had just started running a fever, and later he threw up right after they left. We gave him ginger ice in a cup of juice and he was well enough to go to church the next morning.

@GardenGerty The ice cube idea sounds great. Someone we know uses ginger paste to make tea as needed for his ailments and claims it works.

I drank a lot of it yesterday. It did not raise my blood pressure, and it did make my head feel very clear but not dry like antihistamines do. I hope it is helpful to you.

I go to herbal classes once a month and learn yummy recipes and remedies. As our leader says, herbs are not as fast as a pill but they are much gentler for you and taste good as well, with few or no side effects, unless you have an allergy to a specific herb.

@GardenGerty my hubby's mom was into herbs and we still have a book about natural herbs that you can grow or pick and that was like a bible to her. So refer to it from time to time.

Coughing could be symptoms of several issues. Doctors should be able to point out which many a time they do not. Hope your herbs will do the trick.

@GardenGerty That's tough to find out what causes that allergy.

It is simple. I am hoping that if she will not try the tea daughter can put it in chicken soup or something.

Did you just put it in water or did you add it to hot tea?

I put it in a tea infuser, but you could just put it in a coffee filter and tie it. Poured boiling water over it and let it steep ten minutes. Some leaves had gotten loose so I put it through a filter. I read that you could use peppermint or licorice with it if you disliked the taste. I see no reason that you could not put it with black tea if you wanted. You can use sweetener if you like. I do not drink sweetened beverages due to personal taste.
