I don't know whether it is true or not. It seems that the American's do not use the kettle to make hot water. They tend to use the microwave oven to heat it. Here the kettle is the only one way for us to make hot water. And this is how we can make the instant coffee or tea.

I have an electric kettle.
We have "tea pots" here, as well. I don't know how many people use electric kettles. I am the only one I know who has one.
Yes, a lot of people warm their water with the microwave. I warm mine with the electric kettle.

Yes, the ones you put on the stove is what I called the "tea pot".
I've heard it called a "Kettle" or "tea kettle", but atleast in this household we call it a "tea pot."

@ScribbledAdNauseum In England we call the thing you heat water in a 'kettle' (whether it is an electric kettle or one you put on the stove, which is occasionally called a 'tea kettle') and 'teapot' is only ever used for the thing you actually make the tea in (by pouring boiling water onto the leaves).
Perhaps confusingly, there is a specially shaped utensil for cooking fish in which is called a 'fish kettle' but I don't know of any other utensils which are now called 'kettle'.

@youless When we put it in the microwave, we leave it to heat for maybe a minute or two. The water never over flows.

If I just need really hot water for tea I just turn on my sink and let the hot water get scorching, and then fill up whatever I'm using for the beverage (like hot cocoa). I rarely drink tea and I don't drink coffee, so I don't often have a need for it. Growing up though my mom made tea with hot water from the microwave. I only know a few people who own a kettle. I recently bought one intending to drink more tea, but since I haven't been drinking the tea I haven't used the kettle more than once or twice.

My parents like tea, they have two coffee pots, one runs coffee, and the other water for tea. They do not use a tea kettle, old habits hard to break.

@youless only reason two, is because they were given several pots one year, so they have coffee always in one, and the other just water for anyone that doesn't want the coffee.

I always use a kettle for tea etc especially when preparing a quantity larger than a cup.

I have a kettle (or tea pot if you prefer). However I think you are correct - most people I know do use a microwave

That is a generalization, many people still like to use a kettle to heat water especially if they use loose tea. Do Americans use the microwave, some do some don't.

Some do and some don't. Can't say everyone is in one category.
