Our Cousin Committed Suicide

Years ago one of our cousins committed suicide. He jumped off a bridge in Oregon and drowned himself. He was a very intelligent young man. He could have had mental problems growing up but if he did nobody recognized it. His mother also had mental problems and he likely inherited it from her. He moved away from all the family to Oregon when he was old enough and lived out there several years in and out of mental facilities. He was such a sweet guy. I lost touch with him but one of my sisters exchanged letters with him. I wish I had written to him. After his death officials found a letter from my sister in his apartment and informed her of his death. She informed his brothers and sisters. It's a sad story. Two members of our family have committed suicide. The other one was my sister in law. I wrote about her sometime earlier.

I wonder how much is done at these mental facilities to really help the patient.

I honesty think we don't really know how to treat mental illness.

One thing I have observed it that why if people in close is aware of wrong with him/her sees and dont correct them, why do they don't save ,if you loved the guy should you been guess it before he did that,

I think they learn to hide it at an early age.

It is always a terrible thing as family and friends struggle with what has happened. No one really understands what that person was thinking.

@RubyHawk And your family is left always wondering if they could have helped. Most often it seems, there is not much we can do or could have done.

I agree. We have little idea of what they feel. It's beyond a sane person.

Sometimes they have not mental problems, but they are only depressed and they need help. It is so sad when they finally decide to end their own life.

@RubyHawk I think that doctors cannot heal the mental diseases completely.

One neighbor I had thought someone was chasing him to kill him. He had been in a hospital for the mentally insane and when they released him he killed himself.

That is very sad. It is sometimes hard to fathom why people do this or how to help them beforehand.

@RubyHawk Often you hear how their family and friends had absolutely no idea that there was anything wrong.

It is hard and the person often will not confide to anyone.

It is so sad when people can see no way out and kill themselves.

It is. I can't judge the person though, I don't see what he sees or feel what he feels. Life can get so bad you can't face another day.

I'm so sorry to hear it. He wasn't in his right frame of mind at the time. My grandpa and a friend of mine did the same.
