Unsung Heros: Plumbers

Up next in my "unsung heros" list are plumbers.  Knowing that cleaning the bathroom is one of my least favorite chores - I think about someone whose job insists that they must spend a lot of time in bathrooms - that being the job of plumbers.  Cleaning, or being in, ones own bathroom is task enough. Using someone else's , or even worse a public one... is sometimes a truly germ-o-phobic experience. Now I'm sure that the average plumber does other tasks then fix people's toilets and sink drains - but I know that must be included and probably is a large portion of that they do. And thank goodness for them - because who can imagine a life without indoor plumbing.  So let's offer a quick hat's off for your local plumber. Also included, city sanitation and waste management workers - for the obvious reasons. * If you enjoy these posts please click the "unsung heros" green box at the top

Sadly in my part of the world they are known for not turning up. But those that do so perform a valuable service.

It seems par for the course that tradies often don't turn up. They must have plenty of work to treat potential customers like this.

Wow. I've never heard of that experience here. Other than waiting for the cable TV man who is usually late but at least shows up. That's too bad that they feel the need to treat potential clients like that. :/

@FayeHazel They charge huge amounts here and can cherry-pick their work. I would love to be in that position but I would not treat those who were expecting me with such contempt.

And they sometimes have to go under the house. Spiders and stuff. Ugh.

@teamfreak16 My late husband had to do that many times as out of him, his father, and his brother he was the only one skinny enough to go in the narrow spaces. I had to climb into a 12 inch gap in my cellar foundation to thread new electrical wires for my daughters room and it was not fun at all.

Actually plumbing would not be a job most people would want. Especially walking around sewers and getting yourself covered in waste. Let alone the conditions of places you have to work in.

@KrauseHome my brother in law works on only new buildings putting plumbing in that is a much better job then my late husband and his father had working on old pipes. In 10th grade our class went on a field trip to a sewer plant and I actually thought it looked like a really interesting job!

We have friends who own a plumbing business. They have built it up from nothing and it now supports their three sons and a number of employees. They deserve to have done so well but they do charge a lot for their services.

That's why plumbing is a good profession. There's always crap to deal with.

I'm happy your friend's business went over so well. Do the kids work there too? I find it great when families can work together.

Yes we do much more, like dig ditches and run pipes into the houses, make sure there is drinking water and that the waste pipes are in good shape. I own rental houses and we do our own plumbing

My late husband was a plumber. He worked with his father was a plumber as well. They also did some electrical and heating things. A plumber has an extremely dirty job! One time a sewer pipe broke on husband and he was covered head to toe in feces. When he came home and told me I made him take his clothes off outside and burned them. Even just cleaning the furnaces is so grimy he would be covered in black all over his clothes and hands and face. Such a dirty job but someone has to do it and I am thankful for those that do it!

Me either, it's hard enough for me to use a public restroom... much less want to work with them

The stories we have heard from those who are plumbers are interesting. It seems some humans are slobs, even when they know the plumber is coming.

A job few would want to do, but something everyone wants (plumbing)
