Wardrobe malfunction!

I don’t know about Janet Jackson, but in my book this is what I would call a ‘wardrobe malfunction’. As I’ve mentioned on here before, I have a lot of clothes. Many I just love and keep hanging onto in the hope of having another occasion to wear them. Some I made myself and consequently can’t quite bear to get rid of. A lot I inherited from my Mum who had lots of lovely things. Others just because I really hate shopping and if an out-of-the-ordinary event comes up, like a wedding, funeral, a big party, a job interview or being invited to give a talk for example, I know I can go to the wardrobe and find something to suit, and won’t have to waste my time trawling the High Street shops or the internet. Some I’m even keeping because I think my daughters might like them when they’ve grown a bit more! The problem was that with stuff everywhere, in drawers, on shelves and even in boxes, it was hard to really see what was available, so I thought I would get everything together in one place where I could easily see what was what and decide if I really needed it all, or if I could give away or recycle some things. Our new house has a nice built-in wardrobe in one room, so I thought I’d hang it all up. Unfortunately it turned out that the rail wasn’t quite up to this job – it just snapped clean in two! So I’ve been out and bought a dowel rod and replaced the rail with a thicker one and added a support in the middle, made from one of the pieces of wood I’ve been saving up ‘in case they come in handy’, and so far it all looks good and sturdy. Now I just need more time to try things on! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2017.

The good news is that clothing isn't breakable! You need a room to sue for a walk -in closet! I can rent you space in mine I hardly have anything in my closet.

@AbbyGreenhill That's the funny thing, most days I just wear the same old favourites but I do like to dress up for a special occasion. The situation will resolve itself eventually - my favourite clothes get worn out and in the end I will realise which ones I am never going to wear!

Thanks! : ) I'm trying not to get into the cycle of getting more stuff - filling the space - getting more space - filling it with stuff etc. I've decided that if we have too much to fit into this house, then we definitely have too much stuff!

I had the same problem a couple of years ago, I replaced the rail and added a support in the middle. I wonder why I keep clothing that I never wear.

I know exactly why I'm keeping mine... that doesn't make the problem any better though!

@Fleura I know that I keep them just in case I will need to wear one, so I do not need to go shopping.

My husband built my walk in closet and put in reinforced thick dowels. Never had a problem. It's great that you were able to do it yourself!

I think we are going to have to build another. The bedroom with the wardrobe is more suited to a guest bedroom and the 'main' bedroom doesn't have anything like that.

@DianneN I'm trying to avoid that - I don't want to invite guests then have to go into their room in the morning to get dressed! Some of my favourite things that were rather worn I have avoided actually throwing them away but instead recycled them by making them into clothes for the girls or even for their dolls! Sort of getting rid of them in stages, like gradually weaning myself away!

@Fleura I never mentioned that I also keep clothes stashed in closets in empty bedroom closets and in both the attic and basement. I can't part with certain clothes either, but will bring a lot to Florida next year. I offered things to my daughter in law and younger son's fiancée, but they only took a few things. Their tastes are so different than mine. Good luck getting more closet space. I'd rather give up a room than not have the storage space.

This happened to us once too and we had to reinforce the places that hold the rail at the ends.

Oh yes I replaced those too - previously they were blocks of MDF but that actually started to delaminate so I replaced with real wood instead.

@Fleura A lot of clothes can be very weighty.

I keep alot of clothes for sentimental reasons to, like certain shirts, and jackets.

Funny isn't it, how you can't quite bear to part with them even if you never wear them. I've got around this for some things by making them into something else, sort of getting rid of them and keeping them at the same time!

It happened to me once. I replaced it with a metal rod that can retractable. I brought that from DIY store. Why on earth I have so many clothes? It's not like I wear them all. Must be my hoarding issues. I still have clothes from years back.

Perfect title for your post! I was just talking about how cluttered and cramped my closet is this morning. Luckily though I haven't had a malfunction yet

Yes, this is what comes to my mind when you talk about a wardrobe!

My girlfriend is just the same. She has wardrobe doors that won't shut, mainly because of the hooks and hangers full of clothes that are fitted over the tops of them.

Makes me glad that I got rid of all my suits, jackets and the rest. Now all I've got a lot of cycling kit... don't think it'll overload the rod

I guess that tends to be pretty lightweight, although if you have a lot of it it all adds up!

@Fleura I can't fit anything else in that one wardrobe, but it is not too heavy

I guess so; in British English a wardrobe means both the piece of furniture where you hang clothes, and also a person's complete collection of clothing.
