This Site Is "Not Secure." Does That Bother You?

That's right. If you are using Chrome as a browser, you will see a little "i" with a circle around it right before the URL on this page. It will also happen on Firefox. Click it and see what happens. I discovered 70 cookies and the "Not Secure" message. Would this keep you from using this site? Or any other site with the same message? I have only checked in these two browsers, but I'm guessing all of them have this information. The reason I ask is that I have not yet secured my blogs. I am the only user and I don't sell anything where I collect payments from my site. Yet Google will show that message to anyone who visits my sites. Would that scare you away? Why haven't I secured it? Because it is expensive to get a security certificate and I don't ask anyone for personal information and I don't ask people to log in with a password. I also have links that would all have to be changed to https addresses for many of my images formerly linked to http addresses to load. Most of them are Zazzle images made with Easy Product Display before EPD updated its links a few weeks ago. It would be a huge expenditure of time and money to make my sites secure in the eyes of whatever powers decide these things, and before I do it, I'd like to know how much difference it makes to ordinary people who just want to read and comment -- not buy anything -- at a site. Since you are all using this site, insecure or not, I'm guessing it doesn't make much difference to you. How much difference would seeing the "Not secure" message make to you on a blog or another site you've not visited before? I only check this if I'm entering personal or financial information not already publically available online elsewhere, like profile information.

So you don't have to give your birthday to join sites that insist you be a certain age to join?

@bagarad I haven't encountered such sites. Or maybe I have encountered but didn't register anymore.

@SIMPLYD I think this is one of them. Most of us have our ages showing. It has something to do with legal age requirements for who can use a site.

It all boils down to money-they want you to pay for so call security.I use Firefox browser all the time.Recently the words appear in mylot log-in box,say the site isn't secure,my private information is subject to leaking out.

They want site owners to pay for everything. It takes money to make money they say, and it sure seems to be true in the blogging world.

They just started putting a message in the URL address bar recently. I do want to know if a site taking my credit card numbers is secure, but I do't see why other sites need to be. I'm just afraid some people will be scared away from blogs or other informational websites because they aren't "secure."

@silvermist I run away when I'm assaulted with a message wanting me to subscribe covering the page before I've been able to read the first two lines of the blog. I have to really love the blogger to not leave when that happens -- especially if I've already subscribed.

@bagarad I do not usually run away from blogs if they show that. But many people avoid continuing on that site/blog if such a message is shown.

I would only worry if it was my online bank site or a site where I am buying something off of pay pal. I would want them to be secure.

I usually don't pay that much attention to it unless I have to, or it causes actual problems.

Sounds reasonable to me.
