Marsha's Log: Car Lot Giveaway

We seem to get quite a few fliers in the mail about giveaways at the car lots. Everyone guaranteed a prize. I always put them aside. This time my mother talked me into going to the car lot that was having one while we were out running on her payday. Sigh.....we were stuck there awhile as they talked and talked to us about the good deals on cars, how low the monthly payment can be, how they can put off the first payment by 3 months etc etc. That would all be wonderful if I only had money to actually get a car! I'm one that feels awkward in that situation, knowing I'm in there just to get something free. I shouldn't have felt that way though as the building was filled with tables of others that were there for that very same reason. We both walked away with the guaranteed prize to everyone of a $5 Walmart gift card. I know in years past I used to keep up with a couple of blogs where the people practically made a living taking advantage of getting free gift cards for test drives. Again, I couldn't in good conscience go around to the lots and test drive cars just to get a free gift card with the knowledge that I was not going to buy a car. How do you feel about these types of things?

A friend of mine entered every contest there was. Over 25 years, she won six cars, a new kitchen, trips for her family and so many other things I can't remember.

@PatZAnthony I keep saying I'm going to enter more. Some times when I am waiting on mom somewhere I will go ahead and enter some of the ones the DN shares from the notifications on my phone.

I was recently chatting with someone in facebook--DNBuster. You might remember her from gather.... she used to make her living blogging but now she told me that she makes her living with her winnings from all the sweepstakes and such she is entering online. If you follow her you probably already know this as she shares a lot of them every day.

I would not feel bad as they are taking up a part of your precious life to try to sell you something. And yet. some people do buy from them.

@marsha32 It´s just another unreasonable way of selling. There´s this woman that sells tombs on the cemetary outside the hospital...

I feel like you, I cannot do something only to get a free gift card if I know that I am not going to buy.

I'm sure they get plenty of sales to make up for it though. I seen at least 2 people that were signing contracts just while we were there.

@marsha32 I think that if they do this, it's good for them.

I think it is fine. Giving all those people the $5 gift card was probably cheaper for them than paying for a TV commercial. And they probably sold some cars. I would rather go to work than to sit through several of those though. I have never even tried a mystery shop at a dealership.

@paigea I gave up on mystery shopping when my kids got too old to want to go with me to help me remember names and other things.

@marsha32 I am signed up with over 100 mystery shopping companies. Several of them do car dealerships. None are ever in our small city though which is the main reason I haven't tried it.

I think it is a gimmick and it is going to be taken advantage of. I wonder how long the gift cards and such niceties will last because of people who take advantage of a situation.

I'm sure they were well prepared for the turn out. They do this once a year, but usually the guaranteed prize is a $1 scratch off lottery ticket. I was so glad it was a guaranteed $5 gift card. I was actually surprised to see the place full of people bringing in the flyers.

Well I agree if I wasn't going to buy anything I would feel funny taking advantage to just get a gift card. Then again it would also depend on the situation, the amount of the gift card and what if anything I could get out of it.

If I had money they would have gotten me into a different car easily.

I won't go out of my way to get it, but if some company wants to give me something free I will gladly accept.

I did only agree to go because my daughter had to go pick up a prescription down the street from the dealership. Otherwise I wouldn't have driven to that side of town.
