I had a Fright

I had a fright this morning at the breakfast table. My better half suddenly looked very tired and closed his eyes. I asked him if he was sleepy and he shook his head no. But he kept his eyes closed. I looked closer and saw he was wet in sweat. I turned on the air and asked if he wanted to lie down. He is diabetic and I suddenly understood. I ran and brought a banana and told him to eat it. He managed to eat the banana with me putting it in his mouth. He still kept his eyes closed so I dipped a spoonful of sugar and put that in his mouth. I was ready to call an ambulance but he opened his eyes and became more alert. I've heard of this happening to diabetes but it had never happened to my better half. I think it happened because he has adhered to his diet and hadn't decreased his insulin. It really scared me.

I have had white outs, that is what I call it when my sugar gets to low, everything gets bright and then white, the last time my blood sugar was 57 and I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Its very scary. Call the doctor and tell them what happened, time to change his meds.

It's quite dangerous too isn't it? IF you didn't do something to correct the issue?

@RubyHawk It's a wonder the doctor didn't warn you about it.

He recently went on a diet his dietitian gave him. He isn't eating as much starch. He needs to check his sugar more until he adjusts to his diet. He has already lost several pounds

A good idea. His had never gotten too low before. It gets too high sometimes.I think increasing ng his insulin will prevent it happening again.

This is dangerous, and glad you were around. I know even when Blood sugars are higher it can be hard sometimes to stay awake etc. But it sounds like he needs to get into his Doctor or call them and let them know so they can decrease his insulin intake. If I were you I would be watching him a little more closely all the time and making sure he is eating a snack, etc in the mean time.

His dietician recently put him on a diabetic diet and he had taken too little insulin. He will check more often since this happened.

Thank goodness he is okay now and you managed to help him. I think you need to talk to his doctor about this. I had this happen to my friend before she is diabetic and she went into a diabetic coma. It was very very scary.

Diabetes is such a scary disease. So many of the women in my family have suffered from diabetes one way or another. I am so glad that your husband is alright. It is good to see you here. I believe I first met you over on Gather and then on Bubblews. I am now following you here.

@RubyHawk It's hard to get a handle on how it all works. Normally you need to avoid sugar like the plague but if they have an 'episode' suddenly you need to spoon the sugar in.

@JudyEv You're right. Before his doctors put him on this diet he ate too much starch which turns into sugar. It's a big change for him but he will be healthier.

My father was a diabetic and things like that happened often, unfortunately. Now I am diabetic and since I live alone, I try to be so careful. My doctor keeps a close eye on my numbers, too. Does your husband check his blood sugar daily?

@RubyHawk It scares me sometimes to realize that if something like that were to happen, no one would know about it. My smoke alarm went off the other night while I was cooking (I had the heat up a little too high) and no one even came knocking on my door to see if I was okay. Well, I guess that's a problem with living alone. So I'm as careful as I can be and just keep hoping for the best. I hope things are back to normal for your husband! He's so blessed to have you watching over him.
