I Did The Math Just For Fun

On October, 6,2016 I had a accident and dislocated my right shoulder. The paramedics came and I was taken to the ER. I thought it would be interesting to see how much all of this cost and what I paid. For the home health care it cost $1,712.00 for a woman to come out and bath me about once a week for 4-6 weeks, a physical therapist to come out once or twice a week to work with me for one half hour or so, a occupational therapist to come out once to tell me about some products I could get to help me get around if I wished, and a nurse to come out to the intake at the beginning and then later to give me my flu shot and a social worker who was very little help. Medicare paid 100% for this. The rest of the bills were for the ER, paramedics, ER doctor, x-rays, the orthapaedic surgeon, a sling the ER sent me home with that I never used much at all, and the MRI. The total is $8,565.40 of which I paid $546.02.

I was surprised when I got the thing from Medicare stating how much they paid for the sling. Amazing. It sure wasn't anything special.

That is nuts! No wonder no one can afford medical care these days, it's totally out of control. I'm so glad you did not have to pay it all.
Now, I have no insurance and have to pay for everything myself. I had to get an x-ray some months ago and they quoted me a price which shocked me. I told them I had no insurance and they lowered the price about 70%! That was great but why charge the insured more? Strange.
I'm glad you are better!

@celticeagle I think he will try but there are too many people that make money from the costs of medical treatment so I doubt anything will improve.

Because they get more if it goes to insurance. It's so awful the way things are done. And I doubt Trump is the one to change them.

Doesn't that seem like a ton of money? Medicare could have sent you to Hawaii (or any place of your choice) for several weeks to waited on for that amount.

It is unbelievable. It is hard to imagine how much it will cost for a surgery. Fortunately you just need to pay a little part of it and that's very lucky.
