Finding funding

We always hear how the state budget is tight. In our state we also hear a lot about funding cuts. Nevertheless, our children need educated. Many teachers buy things for their classroom out of their own pockets. Academics are emphasized, but we do have PE and Music and Art to think about as well. Our PE teacher is very creative and determined. She has found a website or organization, maybe even more than one, that will reward her for her creative PE ideas. She makes a point to take photos of students playing her made up PE games. She has various places to submit them, like to some of the manufacturers of PE equipment. Every year she earns grants and rewards that she reinvests into our PE program. She is not wasteful either. Besides the Yardzee that she is setting up for field day, she is recycling other common things. We have used milk jugs that have been cut into scoops to toss and catch balls or bean bags. 1 liter and two liter bottles are collected in sets of ten, filled with sand and become giant yard bowling pins. With a creative mind it becomes easier to find funding so that kids have fun and keep moving.

This district works hard at doing the good things, creatively.

@GardenGerty That's wonderful to know! Not all areas are that giving. I know a few teachers who are working so hard to keep things afloat, but even they admit that they're fighting a losing battle.

When I did daycare I had bottles from a certain cleaning product. I weighted them with kitty litter. Now this teacher is using the twelve pack soda boxes to make giant Jenga for the field day.

I went to a Christian school, but they still couldn't cover everything teachers wanted for their kids. So, my third grade teacher got a side job, doing a paper route. She was so dedicated. She had so many ideas, and that was really the only way she could do them all. My school never made any money. They didn't always charge parents the full amount because they wanted everyone to get a chance to come, plus all the teacher's kids went to school for free. I mean, are the only teachers who are able to have any supplies only for the expensive prep schools? I've yet to meet a teacher who didn't need help for the children in their classes. I don't know how they could go about getting more funding. The lottery was supposed to cover it, but surprise surprise all the money for the lottery didn't all go to the schools...shocker.

Yep, the funds from the lottery were supposed to do so many good things. I like the fact that we do recycle for some fun items, but yes, teachers go to all the back to school sales and stock up to cover those extra things.

Many of us have worked in a school along the way and know the children would not have had much if not for us bringing in supplies and being creative. Those clever enough to apply for grants always make a huge difference in the life of the children they teach.

Often these are just a hundred dollars here or there, but it goes a long way.

@GardenGerty Yes, if someone is smart enough to figure out how to use that money wisely, it could make a huge difference.

She sounds like a great teacher. In Illinois it's going on 2 years since we have had a budget, people are moving out of Illinois in droves. It's really bad here.

That is awful. People leaving just makes the funding more difficult to come by.

@GardenGerty yes it does and the democratic political machine which has been in office far to long just want to continue the taxing and driving out of people for that sake of their pocketbooks. They need to have term limits and get them out.
