I saw this remedy to repel mosquitoes in an article on the website: The formula is copied for you: Here's what you'll need: - 30 drops of lemon-eucalyptus essential oil blend - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract - 4 ounces witch hazel, rubbing alcohol, or vodka Mix the witch hazel, essential oil and vanilla extract into a small spray bottle. You're all set! This formulation will only last for about four hours, so don't forget to re-apply it as needed I have heard similar before. I was sharing with a friend on facebook, however, that I use lemon grass oil and apply it to my "gardening clothes", like on the brim of a hat and the collar and sleeves of a big shirt. I do not wash it out but wear the shirt OVER my other clothes. In the past I have used commercial insect repellants and just sprayed them on clothing. I do not like them on my skin, I get to feeling nauseous. It is the same idea, though. It was kind of funny, my first hubby's grand mother would not wear pants or trousers, ever, except in the garden. She had a pair of overalls that had belonged to her husband before he became ill. She pretty much did the same as I do, putting the repellent substances on her gardening clothes. I feel I learned this valuable trick from her. Remember, mosquitoes are more than a nuisance, they carry deadly diseases.

Mosquitoes can carry a number of very nasty diseases. We need to be repelling them any way we can.

@GardenGerty A thin layer of kero on still water is good too but only if animals don't have access.

I usually use witch hazel. I keep meaning to buy vodka to make my own vanilla extract.

I put lemongrass oil on the sheets, especially when van-camping. It repels spiders, too.

They used to not bother me, then one year I was under a lot of stress and it seemed they came after me with a vengeance. I also usually do not swell up when they bite me, but that same year I would get huge welts. I always was told taking B vitamins repel them.

There are several types of essential oils that work well for repelling insects, but eucalyptus and lemon grass are two of the more popular ones! They also work well for ticks.

I have recently read that the reason essential oils work to prevent tick bites is that the ticks can not smell a person if they are wearing them. I have always planted lemon scented plants as well.

@moffittjc Oh, but the oils are so much nicer smelling than the spray chemicals. I do like that they work.

They are such a bother, I wouldn't mind them biting me so much if I didn't itch or possibly catch some deadly disease from the. I mean what are they good for anyways lol.

They are good to feed the dragonflies. Mostly I do not swell or itch when bit, but I certainly do not want any viruses. I worry more about ticks.

With so much sweet stuff I would be afraid of being attacked by bees! Mosquitoes don't bother me, they prefer my husband. But we don't have many here to begin with.

Bees do not carry viruses, but if you are not bothered by mosquitoes you do not have to worry. Some people repel insects with original flavored Listerine, too.
