She finally expired.

It is the first day of May, and it is a legal holiday, that is why all private and government offices are closed. My sister often goes to the store adjacent to our house, and it was there that she learned about the passing away of our manicurist. AN, the initials of the manicurist, died due to metastasis from cervical cancer, that she did not get chemotherapy management because she said she cannot pay for the medicines. This same month last year, she had the TAHBSO, and her surgeon said she needed to have chemotherapy, but she ignored the advice and went into detoxification and herbal management. I saw her last year and I also noted that she gained weight. She gladly said YES, I AM GETTING FAT NOW, and brushed off the idea of chemotherapy. Then later, we knew that she got thin, with no appetite, bed-ridden, was in adult diapers, and nobody among her children assisted her in her personal needs, even feeding her. She expired this early morning, and her body was brought to the nearest funeral home. I and my sister will probably go to their house to show our sympathies tomorrow evening. She was the second manicurist who did our pedicure, who died of cancer. The first was Ms. L., who died of breast cancer several years ago; she also refused chemotherapy and resorted to detoxification and herbal management. (Now, we cut our toe nails straight and we have no more ingrown nails).

indeed, it is. AN was a good manicurist. she can take a deep-ingrown nail without much effort.

I am very sorry. It's weird how she seemed to gain weight and then went all the way down.

@LadyDuck and having edema is somewhat an end stage of cancer, to some.

she did not actually gain weight as in. fats, my friend. she had edema, or the accumulation of fluid in her body. having edema is a serious complication because she cannot expel the fluids in her cells.

@ridingbet oh typo error. I mean healthcare system. Yes, nurses here in the Philippines are not only the best in their field. They are also the most compassionate.

we nurses take care of the sick with commitment. although there are some, even in other nationalities, who care for their clients for better pay, it should be inherent in a nurse to have the compassion to help the patients get well

It pains me to learn that her children were not there in her hour of need. A "manicurista" usually know all about the local gossip in one's neighborhood so one should not be very talkative in their presence. They make more in their home service compare to many regular 9 to 5 office workers.Unfortunately chemotherapy is very expensive and beyond their financial capabilities.

yes that is true. AN would sometimes talk about other people's lives while doing my nails, but the talks are not really gossips, but the way of life of her relatives. she would mention that the father of her children seldom give her money. when we went to her wake this afternoon, her 2nd daughter told us that last December 31, she cleaned nails from 7PM to 1AM, and her children carried torches to light the toes she was cleaning. they said their mother was so selfless, but i do not still accept why they would have left her alone in their house during daytime.

@josie_ i agree with you. especially the single mothers (in reference to the sarcastic remarks of senator TS about the DSWD secretary as a single mother of 2), we give all our love and attention to our kids.

@ridingbet _She work tirelessly for her children because she is a mother. Children may forsake her but mothers will never abandon their children. That's what mothers are...love.

yes, my friend. since AN lived far from our house, i could not visit her, and her daughters were not into taking care of her. i know this because many times i see her daughters going out in the morning, and arrive home late afternoon, so AN is left alone in their house.
