Eastercon Diary Easter Saturday 15th April 2017 Serious Performance, Deeply Meaningful Poetry

Easter Saturday is confusing. It’s an ordinary non-bank holiday sandwiched between the special Good Friday and Easter Sunday bank holidays. If Christian doctrine is to believed (though not by me), Jesus died on the Friday and got resurrected on the Sunday, to the Saturday seems to be a day when God himself stayed dead. Who was running the Universe? As I and Birmingham are still here despite the big divine sleep-over, I was free to travel from my hostel to the convention again. The first event I attended was a poetry presentation by Dawn Abigail, described, with her tongue firmly in her cheek as a Serious Performance, Deeply Meaningful Poetry. This involved reading her work in front of beautifully caligraphed art work presentations of her work on display and up for auction in some cases in the Convention art show. Some poems had a serious edge though most were very funny, including a celebration of her own stripey socks (worn specially for the performance) and a piece on women’s corsetry and bustiers for which she was ably assisted by Eira, another convention attendee. Great fun. I would be directly involved in a poetry event with Dawn and other lovely wordsmiths myself on the Sunday. Arthur Chappell
