Today, 2017 May 9th, is the day that marks seventy two years after The Second World War end. This is the end of The Great Patriotic War in which Russia and its Soviet army won Fascist Germany and put the end of The Second World War. There was a great parade of victory on The Red Square in Moscow - the capital of Russia. I watched it on The Russian Information Agency "News". It was impressive and inspired of the Russian arms power. This was a great manifestation that updated this historical moment and memories about it. So Russia remembered about its contribution to the European history.

Well, Russia was not alone, and the capitulation was signed by all the Allies : USSR, USA, Great Britain and France.

@WriterAI Initiated ? Russia entered in the war 2 years after France and UK when its territory was invaded. Before this invasion, USSR had a pact with Germany...

@topffer But which was the main war power who reached Berlin? The pact collapsed and Hitler entered the Russian / Soviet territory. The Great Patriotic War was begun by the republics of the Soviet Union. Victory Day is a holiday that commemorates the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War. It was first inaugurated in republics of the Soviet Union, following the signing of the German Instrument of Surrender. But I agree no doubt France and UK have their own contribution in the struggle against fascism.

I saw that too but only a little bit. So many millions lost their lives. Very sad though.

Also May 8th could be popular in places outside the WW2 because of the different time zones of the signing of the German Instrument of Surrender. Victory Day is a holiday that commemorates the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War. It was first inaugurated in the republics of the Soviet Union, following the signing of the German Instrument of Surrender late in the evening on 8 May 1945 (after midnight, thus on 9 May Moscow Time). The Soviet government announced the victory early on 9 May after the signing ceremony in Berlin.Though the official inauguration occurred in 1945 the holiday became a non-labor day only in 1965 and only in certain Soviet republics. It has been always here a working day but accompanied by marking the memories about this day.

@WriterAI thanks for the information. USSR played an indispensable part along with other allies. Even India did play a major role in the 2nd world war, supplying human capital (troops), forced by & on behalf of the British.

No doubt the war was a world one but on the European territory. Japan participated too. Let's mention also Hiroshima and Nagasaki too.

Some of these countries have huge parades. Australia doesn't do this.
