An Odd Pedestrian

The street at 9 PM that Friday night seemed to be more silent than usual, perhaps because of a steady drizzle. A few restaurants and pubs a few hundred meters away from where we were, however, still busy with their customers going in and out. Fifty meters away from the biggest pub, the pedestrian in front of us who had been walking unsteadily, crookedly, suddenly stopped. (We reckoned he just got off from a train station close by.) In the darkness, we heard the sound of many coins hitting the pavement. A few seconds pausing there, then the man stumbled on, lurching straight into the closest entrance of the pub. The light there was bright enough for us to see two things: - His coins were still scattering there everywhere on the pavement, - The man was drunk as a skunk (just an expression here, I don't think skunks ever got drunk.) Strange, why should a drunk want to get to a pub for? (His coins would be a pleasant surprise to some other pedestrians on that busy road .)

Is there such a thing as drunk responsibly? (ah, you mean, drink and go straight to bed to sleep it off?)

I guess he wasn't finished getting wasted for the night @YrNemo . Such a pity to weave through life that way.

@YrNemo yes you do have a good imagination and you could be right too, anything could have caused him to turn to drink for some kind of comfort.

He has not drunk enough as far as he was concerned? He just loves drinking no matter how drunk he might be? As far as he was concerned he just needed a drink? Some possibilities at to why he went into a pub.

As spy movies go, that guy might be someone who just got shot, and staggered that far from the station 600m away to that pub to avoid being chased after?

What about drunkards work. I was working as an intern in a government department. There was a man who came to work and he was drunk that day. He kept on blabbering and disturbing everyone. This government department was very lenient and didn't really had much rules for staff. He was too drunk that he collapsed at particular moment and fortunately they took him home or to the hospital.

@YrNemo yes. And no one seem bothered that he came at work in such a state.

Incredible that his conduct was forgiven that easily... I am shocked.

It's not strange at all. A drunken fool doesn't know he's had enough.

Many drunks don't realize how drunk they are and do try to carry on drinking - I see it a lot - nice story

I liked this writing, it sounded like a story you know. Yes, he did not care about coins, only the drink.

We were about to offer our torch, so the guy could pick up his coins, but the moment we figured out that he was 'out of his mind', we decided to keep a safe distance from him (and his dropping coins).

There must have been a lucky person who saw those coins and picked them up.

You are right, but think of all the dirt on that busy road (not counting yet the humans and their K9s passing by, very often! Ew!).

The coins scattered on the pavement where he checked to see if he had enough for one last drink, perhaps? Good story!

@YrNemo And probably at risk of a drunken tongue-lashing in any case, perhaps. Best kept at a distance in either case.

Oh, the story was real, we saw that drunk with our own eyes just last Friday night. We kept far away from him and his coins though. (If he was just faking his drunken state, we would be in real trouble, right?)

maybe the drunk was so depressed that he thought the liquor he took was not enough to 'drown his bitterness away'.

Fail that, he began to be less drunk, so more doses required.

I'm guessing the comparison of a drunk to a skunk is that they both stink. The drunk probably thought the light of the pub entrance would provide better illumination to where he dropped his coins. Hic!

You are a great comedian. (Never thought of drunk and skunk in that sense, you are a real genius. ).

I am hoping that that guy only walked into that pub to find a table to collapse (sleeping it off before being kicked out of the place!).

Believe me, if I could follow that guy into that pub, I would have interviewed him of why he did such a silly thing. (Too late that night, and I just wanted to go home, out of the drizzle.)

A well described scene, very well written. Drunks often don't acknowledge the fact that they are drunk, that's why he'd want to go into the pub for more.

I do hope that there was more where those coins came from, or the pub people would kick him out. (Unless he was staying there temporarily.) But then again, drinking too much is never good for the liver...
