Favorite "Moon" Songs #7 - "Moondance"

Songs with the word "moon" (or some variation) in the title is the theme for this Favorite "Moon" Songs series of mine. We are at #7, with the classic, "Moondance," by Van Morrison.
Irish vocalist Van Morrison has had a career that a lot of musicians would step on their own mother's to have. The singer is in the Rock and Roll, Songwriters, and Irish Music Halls of Fame, for starters.
(Fun Fact: Morrison was the first living inductee to not attend his own ceremony.)
His 1967 hit, "Brown Eyed Girl," has been played, on radio and television, over 11 million times, putting it into the all-time Top 10 in the United States. In addition to "Brown Eyed Girl," Morrison's songs "Madame George," and "Moondance" are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
The title track to Morrison's 1970 album, "Moondance" was not released as a single until 1977, stalling at #92 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Moondance" is another of those "lack of chart success does not represent what a classic this is" type of songs. It's classic Van Morrison. In fact, it is the song that Morrison performs the most in concert.
And it's really jazzy! Who doesn't like jazzy?

It is a great album. Don't know why they waited seven years to release this. It would've fared much better if released in 1970.

@FourWalls - That's true. Who knows what goes on inside the mind of a record exec.

I prefer Brown Eyed Girl. Moondance was only #92? Like you say, chart ranking is meaningless here. I would have thought successful hit considering how heavily played it is.

It could be the changing of musical tastes in the late 1970's. Punk and new wave were coming along, and disco was still dominating the airwaves. A seven-year-old, jazzy tune might not have had a chance, as it probably would've had in 1970.

@NJChicaa - I think "Brown Eyed Girl" is a great song that I still enjoy. "American Pie" is a great song that I never have to hear again, on the other hand.
