When my girls were growing up they all took a variety of dance types. They turned out to be graceful and hardworking and chosen to compete in dance. Each had their own type of dance they excelled at. I was concerned about them becoming involved in competition and asked them if this is what they want to do. I also let them know that when they no longer wanted to compete they could stop. Of course they would finish out the season first. During one of the first competitions they were involved in I assured them that there was nothing to fear from the people watching. They were there to watch and appreciate the dance. My youngest daughter (6 years old at the time) turned to me and replied, "Mommy, I'm not scared, I just pretend I am dancing alone." I often look back at those days and marvel at the wisdom of a child.

That's great advice from a child and a good way to calm the fears.

@HazySue Some people are like that. Not me. It takes me a while to figure things out.

My oldest was a store manager, she recently had a baby so she is at home now. My middle one is a teacher. My youngest is a bio-chemical forensic agent.

It's funny I think that the competing gave them more confidence.

Sometimes children are wiser than adults. We stress them too much to push competition.

@HazySue Parents are most of the time the reason of too much stress in their children, This is very wrong.

@LadyDuck it's true they are. I want them to experience diffe4rence things but not if it is something that stresses them or make them unhappy.

True, you would not believe what I heard and saw other mothers do when their children were competing. I would never put my child under that kind of stress.

There is a great example of why I love children so much! I've never had children of my own but I worked with a lot of them in my life and sitting and listening to them often made my day!

No, one is a teache4r, one is a store manager, and one is a bio-chemical agent for the government.

@josie_ I am proud of each one. They have done well and are productive adults, that's all any mother could ask for.

@HazySue _All your children seem to have found a good profession. As a mother that is one of our wishes that they have a steady job and a happy family of their own.

I have spoken with some very wise children who in their simple honesty hit the nail on the head. Like the little boy in one of my swimming classes who volunteered to be the first off the diving board, not because he was brave but because he was so scared he wanted to get it over with.

Children are amazing. They can function in a myriad of situations and do well. Dancing is a good thing for kids. Teaches them so many things. It may have helped my awkwardness when I was young.
