Double Murder

Two teenagers committed the crime of murder on two unsuspecting victims. Chillingly enough, the victims were the relatives of one of the perpetrators.
I'll leave the article for you to read. We are only about to hear about it now because a judge lifted the protection / privacy order after the murderers sentences were reduced.
The sentence was for life, but it had been reduced to 17 1/2 years for each. I do not think that the sentence should have been re-negotiated. The couple exhibited no signs of regret. The female, daughter and sister to the victims, left a suicide note. It is assumed that she had the intention to kill herself, but her actions and testimony have me believing that's not true. She only felt "a little sad" that her sister was killed and was glad that her mother had been..
I think it best that they stay locked up for life.
Edwards and Markham, believed to be the UK's youngest double killers, slaughtered Elizabeth and Katie Edwards in their beds before watching Twilight and having sex

There is still room for re-negotiation, I hope.
It is a tricky situation though, as the victims were family to one of the murderers. Even if she was only an accomplice. I am not sure how her family would feel.. Keep her locked up, or let her out.. Or get her psychological help... Or all.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes. I read that victims were family to one murderer.

@TiarasOceanView I can't imagine placing myself in the shoes of her family... There was no mention of father figure either... It seems the killing of her sister might have had something to do with the girl's perceived "my mom loves my sister more."
If that was even part of the reason it's quite sad... but shouldn't take away from the fact that the murder was carried out, that she 'knew it would be all over soon."
They had no remorse or even worry for getting caught... I mean, they were found at the house where it happened.
Just.. wow.

I can't help but think that the boy probably has more regrets than the girl...

Reducing the minimum term from 20 years to 17 1/2 years is not really a gift. In France a life sentence is never a life sentence, they are usually released between 15 and 22 years. It can be more, up to 30 years only for a few crimes, and not for a minor child. The UK has to follow approximately the same scheme, as they are submitted to the European Court of Human Rights like any EU country. I have had a look, and since 1988 when a judge gives a life term in UK he has to tell what will be the minimum term, usually fixed between 15 and 20 years. It just tells that they cannot be released before 17 1/2 years instead of 20, not that they will be.

Thanks for clarifying and correcting me. I have to admit that I forgot it had been written that 22 was the initial sentence. I can't remember what life is considered here in the US but I want to say it's 30? I could be wrong.
I was more disturbed by the murderers themselves and so the minor details I picked up went out of my mind.
I guess you are right, it isn't quite a gift. Especially seeing as they may not (and should not in my opinion) be released at all.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It will depend of their behavior. I do not know how long lasts an average life sentence in the USA.

I disagree. The whole point of punishment should be that the offenders are given the chance to atone for what they have done. At some point they need to be given the chance to rehabilitate into society if it is deemed appropriate. The daughter very obviously has severe mental health issues and presumably these are now being addressed. It is possible that with therapy and medication she will stabilise and perhaps realise what a terrible thing she did, with the remorse coming later. I imagine they were only named because social media was making it impossible for them not to be; everybody in the area would have known and you can't police everybody!
The real shame is that this wasn't picked up and dealt with before her jealousy resulted in such tragic consequences.
Very sad.

That's sad. Probably her mother didn't approve of the boyfriend.

It was more that the girl was jealous of the attention her younger sister was getting, or that she thought her mother loved her younger sister more. Though it could have been partially to do with that.

Yes, or atleast in some sort of facility that can cater to their mental health.

One I agree with you that the sentence shouldn't if been changes, and two who decided that 17 .5 years was a good sentence??

They would be 32 when they are released.
I am not sure who thought that was fair... I think that they (the kids) have something psychologically wrong with them... and that it would be for their benefit and the benefit of the public if they were never released.
