Lately I have come across a few articles describing 'sitting as the mew smoking'. It seems that we may be sitting too much and it might be shortening our lives. Some of us sit for 10 hours and more a day. Were we made to sit as much as 10 hours a day? Might sitting too much harm our health? What are your thoughts on sitting?
You may have heard the statement “Sitting is the New Smoking.” When I first heard this saying, I thought it was crazy. Sitting is NOT like smoking. But recently, I looked more into it, and it completely changed my outlook on one aspect of health that most

I've heard that too, and I agree, though I do sit in this chair for that long or longer every day. I'm trying to get up and move around more. Swimming is helping that out.

Yes, I need to move a lot more, whether it's walking or swimming or dancing or whatever. Now, that the weather is nicer, it should be easier to do. Now, when I take the bus, I'll try to stand instead of sitting and strengthen my leg muscles.

@just4him I understand! I have a couple of friends that have had that operation. One, I a couple of years ago and is doing great. One, very recently and is presently recovering.

@1hopefulman Sounds like a good plan. I'm going to be having knee replacement surgery on both knees soon, standing for any length of time is not an option at the moment.

Interesting! Nevertheless, it seems that everything we do or eat is harmful in some way. If we abode each no-no, would we become immortal? It we sat, smoke, eat sugar, grease, whatever, who would measure how much we are shortening our lives?

We overdo everything, don't we? I know people that watch TV all day and only take a break when they need to go to the bathroom or eat and then they sit there too!

@marguicha That's true! I want to stay healthy as long as possible and so will stand and walk and exercise a bit more in the days ahead especially now with the summer weather. I have spend too much time already visiting doctors and hospital visits. My dad didn't smoke much and he lived over 100. He was always walking and working hard and spent a lot of time working in the garden after he retired. Television was not for him.

Yes, too many of us are sitting way too much, including me. Need to make some changes. Sleep well!

Sitting too much can be bad. Nowadays we are talking about sedentary lifestyle. Lack of movements/physical exercises can be detrimental to health. If I sit for too much I start having back pain.

@Nawsheen We have to include some sort of movement into our daily routine. If we think about it, we will do it. When I will sit down to work on the computer, from now on, I will stand up on the half hour and walk around for a few minutes from now on.

Imagine sitting 10 hours a day? Then we sleep 8 hours. Not much exercise there?

@1hopefulman unfortunately nowadays many people don't have the time to do exercises. And yes many people prefer junk food over homemade food

Sedentary life in general is not good for our health and sitting for too many hours surely does not help. Anyway I have read tips that are more harmful than sitting, the one said "eat your lunch while standing" and this is ridiculous.

I usually eat all my meals standing up at the kitchen counter as of late. No table to wash.

@1hopefulman Eating while standing means not taking time to eat slowly, this is not very good. I like to sit down and take the time to talk with my husband while we eat. It's a moment of relax.

Besides giving people a flat butt, yes I think its causing an obese country. I sit less and less daily, I feel better up moving around and doing something productive. I sit down to eat and I may watch an hour t.v. show. If I am working as a driver I am in real pain of I sit longer than an hour, I am just not used to it anymore.

I have heard that sitting for a long time everyday will cause many health problems. When we have some health problems, we will tend to blame that we don't have enough exercises and have unhealthy diet. So when I am in the office, I still like to go around in the office so that it will be a little exercise for me.

@1hopefulman In fact I still do exercises. I won't go to the gym to do it. I can ride a bike to go to work and go home. Since I had a surgerly lately, so I don't ride a bike these days. I go to work and go home on foot instead.

The truth is that most of us don't have a healthy diet and we don't do enough movement. We eat bad food and sit too much. So let's do less sitting and more walking!

I believe it is not conducive to our health at all. Is it any wonder so many people have health problems from sitting so much. I do take walks and also very active around my place here so that I can lessen my chances of ill health.

I have heard that and I do think not exercising at all can be harmful to health. That is why I try to exercise a little bit and not sit too long each day.

It makes sense to do some exercise and not sit all the time.

Sitting when we eat, sitting when we watch television, sitting at our computer, sitting in school, sitting when socializing, etc. Are we sitting our lives away?

I usually get up to run errands like feeding the cats and dogs inside the home. I have read on Readers Digest to take breaks when working in front of a machine like a computer.

@Deepizzaguy I'm going to try to cut down on my sitting. I'm going to look and try to get a desk that is high enough so that I could stand when I'm on the internet which is more hours than I should. Today I did a lot of walking and exercise but I should do that every day.

I don't know if they live shorter lives. However, I feel very bad for anyone that deals with that health challenge. Maybe the words in this Bible verse will encourage them. Isaiah 35:6 (Amplified Bible) "6 Then the lame will leap like a deer, And the tongue of the mute will shout for joy. For waters will break forth in the wilderness And streams in the desert."
