Separate - Automate - Track

# 73 This is my S-A-T saving tip. It’s so simple, probably not something new to most of us. Well, let it be just a reminder then for you as well as for myself. Separate – try to have a separate account dedicated for your savings. An account that is also where most of your transactions go would hardly be effective for savings - even if it's called 'Savings Account' type by the bank. Automate – try to decide how much you can afford to save then have the amount automatically deposited into your dedicated savings account. This way we will never have to worry about putting some amount away to save after all other transactions. We can use whatever amount left for expenses. Track – not referring to tracking the savings. Once we separate and automate the savings account, it can basically be left to do its own thing. But it’s a good idea to track our expenses. It does not have to be super complicated or sophisticated tracking, just a simple paper/pen notes will do. The idea is to identify possible areas where we can cut the expenses and therefore put more into the savings. Good luck and Happy Savings! Image credit: Pixabay

@sishy7 @responsiveme well, it's still a good balanced combination than 2 spenders.

It seems a great idea. My younger son does this way but his problem is when he need money, he take it from the same.

@sishy7 He made his own saving box by using a shoe carton by closing it well by using cello tapes. Then putting a hole in the middle. But on need he open the tapes and take it out. But I really appreciate his creative talent. He makes many other things from the waste materials. Then showing the same to me boast himself, look how smart your son

@Sreekala he needs to put it in something that he cannot access easily - at least a small portion of what he has so he would still have some amount left for when he needs to buy something without touching the savings...

If only more people were taught these things at an early age . . . not only would it save them money, but it would save them from getting in money trouble down the road (I know too many in this position!). Great tips!

Separate the savings in something that you cannot access easily. At least a small portion of what you put aside. And you can put aside the other portion for rainy days when you need something without touching the savings.

This really works, it is how we have done things in the past. We saved even if it was only $10 a month. It adds up. Good tips

You and my Mom have the same method of handling money. Save a percent of the money. No matter what happens, saving is the priority. My mom has a box for emergency as well.

I like the idea of it but the actual doing part is hard. Well it really helps to have some kept away until such time you really need it. I made a few attempts before and sad to say I had to use them for important occasions. But now I'm starting to do it again and hopefully I get it going.

Try it with a very minimal amount - something that you won't miss it much even if it's not there. It doesn't matter if it's $1 or $10 every week or month, as long as you are able to keep it going regularly then it will grow...

Wonderful way to keep track of your money. If you have the money automatically put in a separate account to save you won't miss it because you never had it.

That's the idea! Easier to get the saving to build up. Even if it is just a small amount at a time, but the regularity will assure that the saving will only increase with time.

Hmmm... I have tried that a time or two... We always end up having some "emergency" that forces us to use that money instead of being able to leave it alone. We are trying a different form of this now. Pretty puts money away for us without telling me how much she is putting away or what the accumulated amount is. If/When we have something go wrong I ask if we have enough to cover whatever it is and she deposits that much into my checking account. (I have no idea if doing so ever wipes that account out. I hope not, but I am careful never to ask.) If I know the amount we have put away, I can guarantee something will happen needing exactly the amount we have! SMH!

Oh, that's how my husband and I kinda go about it too... He has no idea how much I put away... It's not that I'm hiding money from him... He knows I always put some away, but he doesn't know how much... More importantly, what he doesn't know or see, he doesn't spend...
