Last night, former Marine @crossbones27 shared a couple videos of Marine Drill Instructor's calling cadence. So I thought I'd weigh in with my own memories.
I went through Army basic training at Fort Jackson in South Carolina.
Despite my insane fear of heights, my favorite part of the entire eight weeks was the day we spent at Victory Tower, where we had negotiate an obstacle course of sorts before rappelling down the tower itself.
To bolster confidence, the Chaplain went first, coming down head first. Well hell. If the Chaplain can do it...
Yes, I wigged out a little at the top, but there was only one way down. I did what the Drill Sergeants told us to do: have fun with it. I took two short hops to make sure I could do it, then I took a giant hop to the midway point. The next thing my boots touched was the ground.
Frankly, it was a blast, fear of heights be damned.
The video shows a day at Victory Tower, in case you are interested.

It was definitely a fun day. I was out for a year, then I joined the Reserves for Desert Storm.

I have an insane fear of heights too! A couple of years ago, I chaperoned my son's 5th grade class week-long campout at a local summer camp. They had just installed a ropes challenge course, complete with a huge tower, similar to Victory Tower. Part of the week's activities included the challenge course and tower. Of course, before they would let any of the kids on the tower, they expected us adult chaperones to demonstrate. Considering almost all the other teachers and chaperones were women, I was the one "volunteered" to go first. Needless to say, I was terrified out of my mind, but I couldn't let all those little 5th graders down. I didi it, and it was the most exhilarating thing I've ever done. I had a blast. I was terrified the entire time, but still had a blast!

Yep. They told us that we only get to go once, so have fun with it. So I did. And it was the only way down, so I really had no choice!

@teamfreak16 In my case, we had to start at the bottom, climb to the top of the tower, and then rappel down. But I couldn't chicken out in front of about 300 5th graders! haha

@moffittjc - That's kind of how we did it, and interest was shown to what was being , but with a late night, we gave up.

Oh, overall, it was good. I learned a lot, even if I didn't realize it at the time.

It took a lot of nerve, but once I started, it became fun and I was ok.
