Does Birth Order Determine Success?

Since I have five children, I did a little research on this subject. The conclusion of ONE study by Thomas Connellan, said, in a book that he wrote, that” firstborn and only (child) children are more likely to succeed in school and work than others.” What do you think? What is your birth order? Are you a firstborn child, a middle child, or the youngest child in your family? Or are you an ONLY child? Do you think it makes a difference? Part of this study also included some other interesting facts. Half of all U.S. Presidents were firstborn. Two-thirds of successful entrepreneurs are firstborn. Two-thirds of the people listed in “Who’s Who” are firstborn. Twenty-one of the first 23 astronauts were firstborn. Of the female world leaders between 1960 and 1999, 45% were firstborn. The best observation in this report was: “Parents expect firstborns and onlies to act more mature than their age and hold them more accountable for what they do. It’s the old “You should know better than that” syndrome. Guess what? Kids will live up to their parents’ expectations.” I’m still puzzled by this report, as I consider my own children, who are all successful in their own chosen field. But, my husband and I did spend time with our children, teaching them how to live as adults. This is the IMPORTANT factor in raising children, in my opinion. Teach them what they need to know to be a successful adult and to live in an adult world, where everything isn’t handed to them on a platter. Teach them good work ethics and responsibility for their own decisions and actions. Whether you are a firstborn or a tenth born child, like my father was, you can be successful, like he was.

In my family of 4 siblings, my brother is the most successful and he was second born. I could be wrong since my kids are young yet but I have a feeling that my 3rd born will be most successful. She is determined and motivated while the others so far are not. My other children give up when things get tough...unfortunately.

@IreneVincent That is true, but we were discussing careers. If it's a matter of who's happiest I would have to say I am. I have an amazing family, I love providing childcare and I married my soulmate. =) I'm number 3.

Success is also a matter of opinion. What one person views as being successful can be entirely different from what another person thinks. Success in life does not mean how much money someone earns, but it really boils down to how happy someone is with his choices in life.

Personally, I think that it comes down to what each child is handed in their life. The second and third child in our family are the strongest. The first was way too pampered. And the first would be me in case you were wondering ;)

I think you are right. Firstborns are sometimes pampered. An only child is often pampered too. But, some parents pamper all their children and some don't pamper any of their children. It's interesting to think about it though I was the only girl with three brothers. I was pampered by my brothers more than by my parents. My brothers always looked out for me and often protected me from some situations.

@IreneVincent I had 2 other sisters before my parents adopted my brother but I was the one who was pampered the most. I'm surprised that my sister (once passed away in childbirth) even wants anything to do with me ;) Now isn't that interesting about your brothers! Now I can see how that would have come in quite handy lol... introductions to their hunky friends lol!

I don't believe all of that because I come from a blended family which throws the birth order completed out of order.

I think its more about how children are raised and about their own dispositions. Anyone can be successful if they set their mind an heart to it.

I was the 1st born of 6 @IreneVincent and still have yet to be the 1st female president of the US. I agree with your last, full paragraph. My first born son was in the military and my 2nd child (daughter) is an IT Tech Wizard. So it does come down to what and how you teach your children.
