This is Not a Drill

It was not your normal morning at the YWCA this morning. I had been in the pool for about half an hour, we had just sung happy birthday to one of the lap swimmers and the lights started flashing and the sirens started going off. Nobody did anything for a full minute. I freaked but since there wasn't any announcement, I just stayed in the water. Then the lifeguard called to find out and then the announcement came - Everyone out of the pool! Grab your towels and get outside. Without hesitation I took the elevator, not even thinking it would lock up with the alarm, but it didn't and I went to hang out with the other women in their swimsuits out front of the Y. Two firetrucks and the police department showed up. There was smoke on the third floor. One of the desk people brings their children in the morning. Her daughter is only three months old. With all the noise of the alarm, she never woke up. They found it to be a belt to the air conditioning unit that was smoking. A simple change and 20 minutes later, we were told we could go back inside and resume our activities. I went back in the water for a little bit, then into the whirlpool/hot tub, then I joined the gals upstairs in the little cafeteria for a little party for the swimmer who will be 79 tomorrow. She said it was a great way to celebrate her birthday, and nothing would top that unless the Pope came for her next birthday. Normally I'm only in the pool for an hour and leaving by 6:30. I didn't get out of the pool until 6:30 and out of the hot tub by 6:45 and joined the party at 7. I just got home. One side note, we were all outside in the rain in our swimsuits. Now the last time I was in the rain in my swimsuit was when I was a kid. It was definitely a different way to start the day, and though we all expected the news crew to show up as they were only a block away, they missed the photo op of the century of all the early swimmers in their suits standing outside in their towels at 5:30 in the morning. That's how my day started? How's your day? Time for me to get my Bible Study done now. I'll be back later to post that and interact with all of you. Thanks for reading.

What a shock when you should have been relaxing in that pool beginning your day in a nice way. But, thankfully, you all exited safely and it was just a part on the ventilation system. Let's hope that your day improves. I woke up to peace and quiet, as usual, which is the way that I like it. There seems to be a flurry of activity in the neighbourhood today, there are landscapers across the street and a couple more homes are being built, so lots of contractors in the area.

That quiet won't last long if there are houses going up. Yes, it was a different way to start the day. It did improve a little bit - I took a 2 and a half hour nap. I guess I needed it.

@just4him Today has ben very busy, with the noise from the contractors in the vicinity, and there was a moving truck on the block as well as 2 furniture delivery trucks. The noise of these large vehicles and the back up sirens that they all have is the most annoying. We're pretty much aware that for the next couple of months this will be the "norm".

I just spent an hour in my pool - no alarms just Ruby splashing! Glad it wasn't anything serious.

So am I. All my things were in the locker in the basement where the pool is. I was outside in only my suit and towel.

Yikes! What a way to start your day! However, since everything turned out just fine, it ended very nicely and gave you an interesting discussion. I walked 7 miles today, after walking Doodles. My hairdresser also just called me to gab and make plans for getting together. He also texted me a photo of me with long hair, which I never knew he had taken. Hmmmm! Now to enjoy a cup of coffee on the patio, if Doodles will allow it. I have to go shopping later.

@just4him I read and fell asleep, too. I woke up, read some more, and fell asleep again! Tomorrow I will go shopping. We both must be exhausted!

@DianneN Must be. Tomorrow I have two appointments back to back in the morning & early afternoon. So I will be gone for a good part of the day, especially with swimming also - and no fire alarms!

With my hairdresser calling yesterday to cancel today, I found myself back in bed for a 2 and a half hour nap. I didn't realize I was that tired.

@just4him No, two levels and then above that the rooms for the men who stay here. It looks like a 1930's building.

@BelleStarr Interesting that your Y has rooms for the men to stay. We don't have that in Green Bay, but I have heard of it.

@just4him It's pretty cool here in the morning, I would feel cold staying wet in the rain at 5:30 AM.

@MsBooklover I never thought of it that way. They must have really boring lives if they think mine is exciting. I think it's boring. That alarm at the pool was the most exciting thing to happen to me in a very long time. Not since the elephant stampede at a circus I went to many years ago.

Oh, I wish I could join you in the pool. I have been a few places where fire alarms went off and we have been evacuated. I was in a grocery store once and it happened. I knew what they were supposed to do but none of the very young checkers seemed to know, they just ignored it. Sheesh.

The TV station is just a block from the Y. Someone else mentioned it and we all agreed. There were six girls from the pool plus those who work there - 3. I really didn't panic.
