Personal growth from difficult experiences

I was listening to Supertramp's "Take the Long Way Home" earlier this evening. I've been a big fan of that band and that song for many years.
There is a line near the end of the song that I've found to be very true:
"Does it feel that your life's become a catastrophe? Oh it has to be, for you to grow, boy"
I'm 54 years old and I've been through some difficult times. I've learned some very valuable lessons through my failures, grief, troubled relationships, health issues, etc.
I won't mention specifics here, but I might share some of my experiences in separate posts. I must say that I'm grateful though. I realize that many people have been through much worse than I have.
What do you think? Do you agree that we can learn needed lessons from the hard times in life?

We have to learn lesson in our difficult times. It is essential for our progress. I have also had difficult times earlier. But I learned for something and want to progress in life. Do not let them lower your self esteem.
