It was delivered on a pillow

I was sitting at my computer about 8:30 Thursday night when the doorbell rang.
???
I didn't think we'd get a delivery that late at night. We hadn't ordered any food for delivery. Who would be ringing my doorbell?
I open the door and there are two young men, okay - teenagers. I think they might've been 2 of the kids that asked me last week to get their ball from my back yard. (I get why they won't jump the fence, you never know what a dog is going to do when you do that.)
There, on a not terribly clean "happy face"
pillow was this little grey baby.
"Is this one of your kittens?" they asked.
"No," I replied. All my cats are fixed. I opened the door. "But I'll take it."
I scooped the baby up in my hands, thanked them, and shut the door.
"Oh boy," I thought.
I went into the kitchen and called for my wife. She had a minor procedure at the eye doctor's that morning and was sleeping. She didn't wake up.
I went into her room and called her again.
"What?" she asked. It sounded like my first call might've brought her up because she was sort of awake.
"We have an issue," I told her.
"Oh?" she asked. She got out of bed and into her chair. Then she turned on the lights.
"Oh!" she said. "Where did this one come from?"
I explained. I let her hold the baby while I went and got the can of cat milk replacement and then a bottle to feed her with.
I didn't want to keep her more than over night, but the wife says that she wants to try. That this will be the last bottle baby we will probably have. The last bottle babies were just shy of 10 years ago, and you might be able to find my discussions about them from my early days.
So, you see, we now have a kitten. Probably born on July 9th. We think its a girl and have tentatively named her Opal. She's a grey tabby near as we can tell. Her eyes aren't even open yet.
By the way, she's LOUD when she's not happy.

I'm sure mom cat is taking care of them, but this one got out of the nest. There is kind of a harsh rule in nature, the over bold ones that go off too soon and the weak ones are the ones that die. Opal got lucky that she was found by a couple of young people who knew I had cats.

@ElicBxn Yeah, it's possible that the Momma felt the baby had health issues and was going to die anyway.

It is really hard when they are just born like that, we lost 4 back in 2007. She was 4 days old when we got her, and it was still pretty hard and scary those first few days. After about a week it gets a tiny bit easier. We raised Oliver (RIP) in 2005 and then 3 of 4 in 2007. The 4th one had been injured and just failed to thrive like his/her siblings.

@gnatsmom could be that she's just not a very good mother, but at least she is feeding and cleaning them. Keep an eye and if you think they aren't getting enough, you could supplement what she's doing. It isn't necessary for the mom to be with them all the time. Feral cats only come every few hours because she still needs to eat/hunt and if she were with them all the time, predators would know where they were.

Good luck with Opal, I have had many baby cats, gut never had to bottle feed one. You certainly seem to have a soft spot for animals. I hope things work out for you and the animals.

My ex always love adopting animals like dogs and cat. If he saw cat in the street and no one bothered to look after the cat he then took them to the house.
The only thing i hated him in doing that because he never takes care of them since he is always out for work all day up to late at night.
So i am the one taking care of them and i also have a job and our daughter to takes care with. I told him why he keeps on adopting those pet if he can't manage to care for them.
His answer was just, he lost his mother when he was only 8 and his father was always out and he grows up with just a maid in the house. And that he knows what it feels to be abandoned and be alone. And so i rest my case.
