Have you ever been a moderator?

I was a moderator at one site which unfortunately closed down. Dealing with infractions specially by those who are close to a moderator is difficult to handle but fairness is what is expected of a moderator. Have you ever been a moderator and did you have to deal with infractions of those close to you? Did you give them a blind eye? Would you like to be a moderator? If no. Why?

I have never been a moderator of an online forum. But as a moderator, we should always remain steadfast to the rules under any given circumstances. No exceptions and no special consideration should be given as it may become a precedent which could affect future decisions.

But all moderators are not fair. They exploit the situation and protect their friends.

I did hold a similar position many years ago with a site that was building a search engine. The position was easy enough to legislate, simply by offering advice to anyone who deviated from the guidelines followed by a more strict approach of my advice was ignored. The biggest problem was that it distracted me from the general participation in the site itself.

@allknowing Exactly, the responsibility and duties are fine but they can be rather time consuming.

Your observation is right. I also did not get much time to my own work there.

i haven't been a moderator and I doubt if I'll qualify to be one. If I was given a chance, I'll most likely turn it down.

@allknowing true. I'd consider it if it paid well and had perks. done for free, I'll definitely most likely decline it.

I've never been one and I don't know what it all involves. I don't think I can do it . . . I don't think I'd want to deal with having to make things fair. I can sometimes struggle with keeping business and personal separate.

I was once a moderator on a site with a lot of people who suffered from multiple personality disorder. That could be very interesting some days. I was also the board Pastor on a message board where the owner turned really funny towards those of us with strong Christian beliefs despite letting us have a secret board.

@allknowing Well, the owner of one board found it all too much. The owner of the other had a meltdown and banned anyone who dod not agree with her on every point. Most of the people on her board then set up one of their pwn and I set up a new Christian board. These things have a life span.

I doubt if I'd have the necessary extra time to give to being a moderator anywhere at present. If I had the extra time, I could be a Lead editor for a small press publishing company where I've done work before. I was approached out of the blue before I began writing at bubblews to put together five articles on various topics for a new branch of a website. I was given topics I could write about and was able to change a few of what they wanted to fit what I was familiar with. I got paid forty dollars outright although I was never paid any other money during my time there. While a member there I was asked if I'd care to be a sort of guardian, and help others, but I don't remember needing to do much in that capacity.

Never been and I don't think I would want to be one. I just don't think I have the patience to deal with different individuals' tantrums

Yes, I was a moderator on one site for several years. Just like on myLot the moderation was done secretly so moderators didn't have to worry about correcting people close to them. It is a shame when people know who the "secret" moderators are, though. I've run into that on a site lately. Nobody is willing to moderate the moderators! That is such a shame! I really don't have time to be a moderator anymore, allknowing. It can take a lot of time learning how to catch people when they have learned the esoteric ways to get around the system on any site. (A lot of things learned on other sites work as well on a new site as it did on another one! It is just not worth the trouble!)

I fully agree. Youi cannot enjoy a site when you are a moderator.

In my day, the title was "fair witness" - a fair witness was an individual trained to observe events and report exactly what he or she saw and heard, making no extrapolations or assumptions. It was a thankless, and at times all-consuming task...
