We will be having Extended Year, or summer school for a few hours the next two weeks. For these two autistic boys it is helpful to get to see the classrooms they will be in, and get used to having to be awake in the afternoon. So that is Tuesday (today) and Thursday of this week and next. In between are some inservice and training days. I have to use my calendar to see where I am and when for now. School officially starts August 17. Image includes my granddaughter, playing volleyball.

You start early. Our kids don't go back until the end of the month, just to have a three day weekend for Labor Day.

That is how it used to be here. I think they factor in long holidays and snow days that may or may not happen, so the kids get a couple of good weeks in place before Labor Day weekend.

@GardenGerty Snow days are always factored in here. If we go past the allotted snow days, then school is extended or Spring break is cut short.

What a nice photo! I love volleyball, too. My school system also had special students visit the school and classrooms, too. Many parents of general ed. students also visited while I was settling up my classroom. It helps relieve anxiety. Wow, school starts early for you.

When I did daycare I even got to take some kids in who were moving up to middle school. I think that is one of the scarier transitions for kids.

@GardenGerty Our school did the same thing. It is scary for all students, especially the special ones.

Thanks for explaining, I thought for a second there, that you must have also been a coach re: this sport.

Are they (autistic boys) in a special school or in a normal school?

In our part of the United States special needs students go to special classes in regular school. Our room is described as a structured classroom. The students go to some activities with their peers, like music and p.e. and recess and lunch. The may do work at their level in the classroom with their peers with the help of their paraprofessionals. That is my job.

I pray for a safe year in all the schools that God would send His angels to protect and assist classmates. I pray for the staff that God would help them and protect them as well. God please be in the halls of each school in the United States, they need You. Let there be hope where there would otherwise be depression. Let there be peace where otherwise there would be hatred and violence I pray in Jesus mighty name Amen

Thanks Kimberly, all of our schools need prayer and protection. It is wonderful that I still live in a little pocket of the world where most people are kind, and not ashamed to be believers and who genuinely love the kids and their jobs.

I remember those days of getting things prepared for the start of school. As much as I though I wouldn't miss it, I do.

I have worked in many ways to support both older and younger people with special needs, and I do miss it when I am not working.

@GardenGerty I used to have a special needs self contained class for 4 years and was heavily involved in special Olympics. It is a good feeling to be involved and help others.

I had one of my tenants ask for me to come earlier than usual because they have to take their little ones in to register this evening. School has been known to start here as early as August 2nd. I am not sure yet when it begins but I will find out today.

One place I lived had year round school. Six weeks on, two off, four tracks or groups of kids. It was a way to 1. prevent vandalism in the school and 2. use resources better so that they did not have to build new buildings. That was because the buildings then did not sit vacant in the summer. The third advantage is that kids retained their learning better. I do not think it will ever catch on here. I will say Aug.2 is awfully early.
