Fish and Ponds

No, not real fish in real ponds. If you remember, I had this roommate who we evicted just over 2 years ago. Now, before she lived with us, she lived in Kaufman Texas. Not a large town even though it is the county seat of Kaufman County. To top it off, she was Roman Catholic in a predominately Protestant area. Now, she had sung when she was at the Blind School and had a pretty nice voice. I'm sure she was a stand out singer at her little RC church. But then she moved to Austin after her mother died. Now Austin is a big city. It also has a lot of Roman Catholics in town. When she came to Austin, she got involved in the church choir. Things seem to go along okay, and then she stopped going. "I get sick all the time," was what she told us. What we suspect is that she badgered the choir master about getting a solo and he said no. When she was in Kaufman, she was "special." A big fish in a small pond. Here in Austin she was just average. The same size fish, just in a much larger pond.

I did not know that being Catholic could be a problem in the United States, interesting.

Its not a problem, just that some smaller towns are more of one than another religion. Down in south Texas, its probably more Catholic because of the Hispanic population, but Kaufman is around Dallas and that was settled by people who came out of the then United States, and therefore more Protestant. There are some Protestants who don't like Catholics, but there isn't anything against them. There was back in the settling of the English here, Maryland was actually settled by Roman Catholics - hence "Mary-Land."

@LadyDuck I agree, but remember, the United States were settled by people often fleeing from religious persecution. Then there are those who claim to be leaders who seem to actually encourage their followers to do it.

@ElicBxn We have no problems here with minorities, but nobody ask to the others which religion they are and which Church they go, this is always a very private matter in Europe. I do not even know the religion of many of my friends, this is personal.

Big fish in a small pond suddenly finds herself as a relatively normal fish in a big pond.

Actually, more like a small fish in the big pond. And where she had the most talent in that small pond, here she wasn't the most talented.
