This is a coyote decoy and why would I write about that?

In our little manufactured home community, there is a small lake along the east side. It attracts ducks and geese and the geese nest there in the spring. The goose families come ashore to feast on the new spring grass after their eggs hatch and things get a bit messy on the lawns that adjoin the lake.
Someone had the bright idea of getting some decoys like that in the photo in he hope of scaring the geese away from the shore. I am not sure how many "coyotes" we now have living here.
The thing is, by the time the decoys arrived, the geese had grown their goslings and now just visit from time to time. And another thing, putting predator decoys around to scare off any birds just does not work. I learned that when I worked at the bird seed store. Decoys don't move and look phony, so birds get wise quickly. There are no actual coyotes in the vicinity here, just occasional bears and cougars.
I had never seen a coyote decoy before.

I've never seen one either. My sister who lives back in the country has live coyotes walking around in her yard. The complex near have geese by the dozen. We once saw them walking in Aline down the middle of the road, Cars were on the side of the road waiting for them to pass

BIrds aren't dumb. Coyote decoys? Seems odd to me. Coyotes are a big thing in the Appalachians. I guess the wolves got moved out due to their habitat being cut down. So now they have a lot of coyotes.

@celticeagle Yes, and they are growing less afraid of humans. Coy-dogs are also spreading across the country I have read, big and much less afraid.

Coyotes have been seen in Portland I know and there is quite a population in Los Angeles and south of there as well.

I´m glad the decoys did not work. If you live at a place with ducks and geese, you have to accept they mess up some. The answer is to move to a place with no geese.

@JamesHxstatic I´d rather have geese than a beautiful lawn.

@JamesHxstatic I have a story for you, also. Walking my dog, we passed a home with a statue of a black dog on the porch. Kobe got upset seeing that dog, the first couple times. Now, he totally ignores it!:(

It does not take long for animals to recognize fakes.

@divalounger Yes, black bears roam the woods. A sow and two cubs were seen near the community college recently.

Cougars and bears get close to the edge of town in the hills, but coyotes are more likely in eastern Oregon.

Yes, people try funny things to deter nature, and few work.

@JamesHxstatic The birds, geese and ducks know very well, they can be careful at first, but the immediately realize that this thing does not move.

There is research that shows that kind of decoy does little or nothing to deter birds.

I don't think people realize how smart birds really are haha and how many cares they do not give. Also, why coyotes? of all the canines, why pick one that isn't even local? Haha!
Glad they didn't work because ducks and geese are such a pretty sight and if you choose to live near the water, well no matter what it is going to get messy haha

Yeah, I never saw a coyote decoy either. I guess the birds are smarter than we give them credit for. I think scarecrows work sometimes though..People have been using them for years anyway.

Not sure how this could work, but someone might be keeping track. It seems if there is no odor of a coyote, the geese would not feel fear.
