Favorite Gary Moore Songs #7 - "After the War"

After a love song and a couple of shredding guitar instrumentals, we have reached Gary Moore's protest side with "After the War," #7 in my series of favorite songs by my favorite guitarist. Having grown up in war torn Belfast, Northern Ireland, some of Gary Moore's best songs were protest songs, particularly anti-war tunes. The title track from his 1989 album, "After the War" continued his fervent stance on the subject. It was, however, in a way, more of the same, something the guitarist had perfected, both lyrically and musically, earlier in the decade. It is a listener-friendly hard rocker that, as usual, charted well in Europe, but made no inroads whatsoever here in the States, where he fared much better when he switched over to being a full time bluesman the following year. In addition to an all star band consisting of bassist Bob Daisley, keyboardist Neil Carter, and drummer Cozy Powell, the song is notable for Sisters of Mercy leader Andrew Eldritch on backing vocals. Oddly, the video contains footage of US involvement in Vietnam rather than his native Northern Ireland. I wouldn't consider this one of his classic protest songs (those are on the way,) but I like it. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

This is a protest song! Love that saying. It indeed sounds like his true sound when he was not experimenting. Cool stuff and like the protest lyrics.

I have a feeling he didn't have creative control over the video.

Watching and listening to the video I realized why it wasn't popular here: no hairspray in that band. Too much originality, too.

- I couldn't picture Gary getting near a can of hairspray, let alone letting the band. Although the makeup artist probably used a little for the video!
