Who Are the Millennials?

I know this is a relatively new term and I often hear my boss mentioned about it during our meetings. At first, I didn't quite comprehend when he mentioned the term.
He would point out that millennials are not collaborative. When I searched for the term, there were different interpretations and meanings associated with it. The dictionary defined it as a person who was born in the 1980s or 1990s. Some sites associated the term with a negative generalization like "lazy" or "entitled". I know they are the young people, my children belong to this generation.
I guess every individual who belongs to a certain generation has their own characteristic. What's your thought on this?

People are big on categorizing things! Everything and everyone must have a label. Just human nature no big deal.

Each generation has its great qualities. They keep changing the years for the different groups as well I have noticed. I think they generalize too much.
My son is of the 80s child also. He did not want to be in the mellinium category lol
I am of the 50s child. Baby Boomer me.

We are in the same generation. There are also some ideas that millennials are products of Baby Boomers who tried to give them everything they could afford. That is the reason why they act that way. I think it all depends on the status of the parents. Although I was directly hit by that.

@ARIES1973 Yes I think that too, it really is more individual, but I suppose that some people have come up with these labels for different generations. I certainly was not given much growing up. Thats nice we are of the same generation then Aries.

@TiarasOceanView Yes, and because of the cropping up of different views and opinions, I am thinking that we are the cause of this new generation or should I say, millennials are the effect of our actions.

My biggest pet peeve as one born in 1980, im classified now as a millenial. Funny, all throughout my teen years in the 90s we got classified as Generation x, when the fu*k did that change? Personally I relate more to the Gen x ers than I do the millenials

So, there are several considerations and age is just part of it. This is a very broad topic, I guess. I need to learn about Generation X. I won't be surprised if there will be another generation, "Generation Y". The 90s, I was in high school that time. Thank you for the great input.

Yeah, when we look into this carefully, people from different generation are somehow different, that's why some people from an older generation would tell the later ones by saying "during our generation, thing are not like this, we don't do things this way".

Yes, I also encounter some people saying that. They tried to compare their generation to the present one. They also compare things, habits, and attitudes. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Yes, that's true. We tend to generalize thus, giving several misconceptions about this generation.

OUnfortunately I refer to many of these as the Lazy unthankful generation. They expect the good jobs etc to come to them or not want to work hard to get them.

That goes with the premise that nothing is permanent in this world. Thank you for sharing your opinion.

I think that all generations have a term. I was born at the end of WW2 (1945) so I am termed a "Baby Boomer".

I made some research to see which generation I belong and here it is:
Source: Career planner.com
Generation Name Births Start Births End
Baby Boomer Generation 1946 1964
Generation X (Baby Bust) 1965 1979
Generation Y - The Millennial - Gen Next 1980 1995
Generation Z 1996 2010
Based on this table, I am a Generation X (Baby Bust)
