Mysterious Crows

I have always found crows to be mysterious birds. There are three rather large crows that come to visit my garden. Sid never bothers with them but he does look at them and when they see him they starts to caw really loudly. In the photo you can see one of them sitting and eating. So I thought I would look up some facts about crows. Crows that live in suburban areas need only 10% nesting territory as do crows who live in the wild. They’ll build fake nests just to fool predators. One really unusual thing is that they will take and crush an ant and then rub it all over themselves because the scent that comes from the ant helps protect against parasites. It is interesting that if owners keep crows as pets the crows will give their owner a name. They will then identify their owners by making a unique sound when around them. Actually the three crows in my garden don’t count as pets but I believe they have given me a name because whenever I have not put out any food and they see me they make the oddest sounds at me until I put something out for them. Two more facts that make them seem like human are that they can count to six and they sunbathe to get Vitamin D. Crows that are healthy will help crippled crows but will at times murder each other for reasons that scientist don’t understand. My thought is perhaps if one crow is really ill they want to put it out of its misery. An usual fact for me is that crows have been seen chasing sparrows into building to stun them and make a meal out of them but all of the crows, mid-sized birds and smallest birds in the garden share food and never attack one another. Crows supposedly eat more than 1000 food items among them insects, worms, berries, birds eggs and nestings, small mammals, bats, fish, sankes and many other different items. They will eat human food like hamburgers and French fries. I know among the favorites in my garden are bread, rice, macaroni, sausage and bits of meat if I have scraps left over. Any crow fans out there? http://www.avesnoir.com/10-really-weird-crow-facts/
