Another day on French soil

We should be asleep on the ferry on our way to Ireland but instead we'll be sleeping in a hotel in Cherbourg, France courtesy of Stena ferry company. There was a problem with the ferry and our crossing was cancelled so the company has had to make arrangements to compensate people in some way. So we have a voucher for Bed and Breakfast in a hotel. We also had dinner at the hotel and at 9am tomorrow there will be an update on what is happening. While it doesn’t affect us too much, it is very inconvenient for some. Those with pets have had to have them checked at a vets. If they are not out of France in five days, they will have to be inspected again. Others have reservations in various places so it is awkward for some. I wonder if we’ll sail tomorrow or maybe it will be the following day. The photo is from Lourdes.

When people travel delays are part of the adventure. Everyone must take it with good grace.

That's true. There is not much you can do about such problems. Now we sail to Portsmouth, England, tomorrow evening then drive to Fishguard (I think it is in Wales) then catch another ferry to Rosslare, Ireland.

For all those who had to catch a flight this is surely more than annoying. Is this a strike? In France it happens that they stop working without previous notice. It happened also with airlines companies, very, very annoying.

@JudyEv At least you were not on a tight schedule, but now you have a long way to go.

The ferry has broken down and they are now trying repair it. It is certainly very annoying for those with appointments to keep. We are in for a very long drive tomorrow to get from Portsmouth to Fishguard as we travel much slower than a car.

I remember the last time I experienced the ferry was when my boyfriend and I travelled to Macau which was one hour away from Hongkong. Thank God that the travel was only for one hour. I couldn't stand the waves and it was like I would be going to puke anytime. That was my first time to ride a ferry. I guess maybe you are already used on riding a ferry. It is also a good thing that the situation doesn't affect you much. Sorry to hear about the other passengers.

@JudyEv Oh, I hate bumpy ride. Is that a cathedral on your photo?

The ferries that go back and forth across the English Channel are possibly much bigger than the one you travelled on but perhaps not. We've been lucky in that with each crossing so far the water has been like a millpond and the crossing very smooth. I'm told the high-speed one today might be bumpier.

@annierose That was the outside of the church at Lourdes. I'm not sure if it's classed as a cathedral or not.

Wow, nice shot. Did you achieve the gold tone because of a sunset or sunrise?

Many of the statues have a lot of gold leaf or ornamentation.

Imagine how much all that gold could bring in if it were needed for a disaster @JudyEv

@rebelann Melk Abbey in Austria had gold everywhere. It seemed obscenely 'rich' to me but in those days it was all done for the glory of God. I can't imagine how many starving children it could feed but how would you get any money from it all - except by tourism.

I hope everything worked out. I would hate to have to go through a pet inspection again, especially when it wasn't my fault.

@teamfreak16 It's terrible. I stayed in the van and read a book! I'm not very supportive sometimes.

Some were getting pretty stressed with waiting around. The first day Vince spent nearly six hours in the queue waiting for information.

The pets belong to people who have been on holiday. Customs want animals checked before they are allowed to travel.
