Child labor turns into a project turns into an experiment

I was hoping to exploit my 8-year-old friend today, and get some child labor out of him, but we got involved in a project instead. While looking for some 60 grit sandpaper to put him to work on my outside table, I stumbled on some popsicle sticks, and we decided to build rafts. I have plenty of wine corks here, so we started gluing with Elmer's wood glue, and our rafts are now drying. We're going to hit the pool in about 15 minutes and see if the rafts stand up to the water. We used Elmer's wood glue (a water-based glue) to make them. Any bets?

I think they will last it for a time. That is until there is a tidal wave that hits.

@TheHorse If it's good and dry it should work. Hot glue works well too. Let us know if they float or not. Plus, shame on you for exploiting child labor like you considered doing. It is good the popsicle sticks got in the way.

@poehere I'm a merciless exploiter of child labor. This kid has helped me refinish speakers, resurface my outside table, and water various gardens we've created. Buwaahaahaa!

We had a great time! They DID float. But the popsicle sticks started to warp in the water after awhile. Still, they stayed together.

My bet? Yes your raft floated. Did you use the corks for another project?

@TheHorse Those sticks tend to warp, probably because it's made of a sawdust composite.

We glued the corks to the bottoms, so the wood would be out of the water a bit. Yes, they floated! But eventually, the wood started to warp. No lives (or Matchbox cars) were lost.

@Courtlynn I'm going to buy some more polyurethane (the stuff I use on my coasters) and see if I can make "warp-resistant" popsicle sticks.

I kind of what to know how long they hold haha it seems like they would, since wood glue is pretty good. A good experiment haha

@DesirousDreamer My young friend asked about explosions. I told him he could have $1,000,000 if he could get his floaty ball to the bottom of the pool.

Oh well, guess it will be a good lesson. The million dollar question should be how long before it falls apart?

The sticks started to warp after awhile. Now I want to know whether the polyurethane I use on my coasters will work on the popsicle sticks. Heh.

They floated well! Our next task will be to make the wood more water-resistant, so it doesn't warp. Then we'll put little candles on the for when we swim in the evenings.

@TheHorse Yes, the rafts will float nicely, for about an hour or two! LOL That glue is water soluble so it will eventually dissolve in the pool. Have fun, anyway!:)

What happened was some of the wood sticks started to warp after an hour or so. Some of the glue let go and some held. I'll have to see how the rafts look today. My co-experimenter has them right now.
