That is right it is a thing now! This is how it works, you know how you would go 9x4=36, that was easy right?
Now we are going to do it the Common Core Way. You don't do it that way this is it.
9x4= You break down the 9 you take numbers that will add up to 9. Like this
3 3 and 3 would be nine right? So you do this
3x4=12
3x4=12
3x4=12 Then you add all the 12s to get .. TA DA 36 and that is the new way of doing it.
Now if you have a bigger number say 260x4 which would be 1040 and written like this
260
x 4
1040 Right?? WRONG! Now you have to do it like this when they ask for the Common Core Way The 2 is in the hundreds place the 6 in the tens and the 0 is in the ones so ...
200x4= 800 60 x 4= 240 0x4=0 .. then you add those answers to get 1040.
WELCOME to my world of having to not just teach multiplication but also having to teach this on top of regular multiplication. UGH!

I don't like how they keep changing things. Math can be so simple if the world would let it be. Sorry but I still like the old way of doing it. I used to have to memorize things like multiplication,division, all of that. And guess what. I can come up with the answer quicker than a lot of people and I don't use a calculator or anything. What is happening to the world?

I don't like it either, Just does not make sense to me to add more steps. They say this is the easier way of doing it thou. The thing that gets me is they now have to learn to multiply 3 different ways. I want to tell them if a child learns to remember the multiplication table we should just be happy! I think they are pushing kids to fast too.

@Ithink Remembering the multiplication tables is so much easier to me. I was trying to help my one granddaughter out a few years ago with her math. I showed her how I used to do it and she let me know that it was the wrong way to do it. I watched her do it my way and then the way she was being taught. Needless to say she caught on to my old fashion way a lot quicker.
