I Fired My Editors

I've been more than frustrated with my editors for Freedom's Cry. They said they were having some experts read it, yet they didn't read it, so they found someone else they said would read it. In all this time, since August 8, I have not received so much as a word from them about what is going on without my having to beg for information. That is not how it should be between an editor and his/her client - the author.
I've been attending Writer's Guild here for several years, and those who have had books published by traditional publishers were always in contact with them. They knew what was going on from start to finish. I know I'm self-publishing this book, but the same rules should apply. I'm doing all the editing for Freedom's Cry, they aren't doing any editing. They are formatting it and giving a cover for it. They were also going to help with marketing.
With all the lack of communication between them and me, I finally took the bull by the horns and told them I don't want them handling the book any longer, and I expected a full refund, realizing the cover no longer belonged to me.
They replied that they normally took six months for a book and it's only been two, and I was within rights to terminate the contract. They would refund all but $100 and I get to keep the cover.
They are also relinquishing rights to Scarred, which I didn't realize they had. So that book will also be in my complete control.
As soon as I have the refund and termination document, I will proceed to self-publish this book. I took care of the problem area they alerted me to that caused all this delay, and have no qualms that it is ready to publish.
That said, next Tuesday is Writer's Guild and I want to ask if someone will read it for me just to ease my mind that it is ready and I'm not going to offend anyone with this story. I trust the members of this group, so I do not expect any further delays in publishing this book, and expect it to be ready in plenty of time for either Thanksgiving or Christmas.
That is my news on Freedom's Cry. I will let you all know when the book is finally published.
Have you had any frustrating situations lately? Thanks for reading.

Glad you have taken action to reach your goal. I hope it will be smooth sailing from now on.
I am thankful that I have no frustrations at the moment except with getting older. I want to slow it down but nobody is listening to me.

@DianneN I've been thinking about that. I have a friend I contacted a while back who is an artist. I've been thinking about contacting her about the back cover and spine to complete it. Or I'll just leave it and just have the back cover copy with my photo and bio on it.

It's only the front cover. There was supposed to be a back cover too, and a 4 on the spine like I have for the first book. But at least I can keep the cover. I do like it.
When I got an e-mail from them yesterday, they let me know they had been holding on to my royalty for Scarred as well. I was furious when I read that. I wondered where it was because four people that I know of ordered copies of Scarred, either the book or eBook version.

Sorry that you were having trouble with the editor's. I hope that you find someone next week at your meeting to help you out. That would be completely frustrating. I haven't had any frustrating situations lately but I am sure they will visit, we don't go through life with out it. Makes me appreciate the calm days like now.

Glad you were able to get this taken care of, and will be able to reach your Goal and get this published.
Things are pretty smooth right now except for Financial and continuing to hope for a Miracle.

Sometimes you need to take a stand and do what is right for you. If they aren't doing what they said they would, let them go.

You did the right thing. You paid them to work on your book and all they did was to delay it. It think it would be much better if they were just honest and the communication was still on.

Sorry to hear about this. Have you thought about self publishing your book? There are places that will help you with self publishing.

Thank you. I know it's a good decision. I also learned today that they are sending two checks. They've been holding my royalty for Scarred.

goodluck
