It is fascinating what you can find out about the months, their symbols and how they were named. October came from the Latin world octo and it means eight. So even though we know it as the 10th month in our calendar it was the 8th month in the ancient Roman calendar. The zodiac signs for this month are Libra and Scorpio. Flowers of the month are cosmos and calendula and the three birthstones are opal, tourmaline and beryl. Both flowers come in shades of pink. Opals are an amorphous form of silica, tourmaline is a semi-precious stone and beryl, a mineral all come in a variety of colors. My thought is that the reason these birthstones are part of October is that they are as colorful as autumn is. Scorpio is the Latin term for scorpion and it’s a constellation in the southern sky, lying between Sagittarius and Libra. In the Latvian calendar October is referred to as Velu menesis or the month of the spirits of the dead because it is thought that the spirits of our loved ones come to visit us at the end of the month.
