I'm so tired and annoyed tonight

Last weekend my job scheduled me two open to close shifts: one was from 430am til 1030pm, and the other from 6am til 945pm. This doesn't count my commute to work, but I told them I could not handle it again. I am no spring chicken anymore. While I am still young, I am 37, not 17 anymore. I have aches and pains where before there were none. Yesterday, I did them a favor. I had worked 5am til 1pm and they called me to come back in because someone called out. So I worked til 930pm and didn't get home til 11pm. By the time I had a late dinner and crawled into bed, it was 1130pm only to have to wake back up at 4am and start working by 5am. I work in food service for a fast casual restaurant. This is not life or death. I came home after getting off at 120pm and fell asleep without even eating lunch because that was just how tired I was. They really had the audacity to call me at 4pm. Today, I did not bother to answer the phone. I open tomorrow morning too. There was no way I was pulling a double shift today and I am already at overtime with yesterday's extra shift. I'm writing this vent as I prepare my dinner. I am making some boiled veggies (potatoes, sweet potatoes, and baby carrots seasoned with butter, black pepper, salt, minced garlic and minced onions), white rice, and some fried fish fillet. Once I eat, it's off to bed I go. I am so sleepy!

You need the break! That's a lot of work! I dont blame you for not answering, they should understand that you need some time for yourself as well.

I wouldn't have been able to last the shift. My ankle hurts a lot right now.

I slept 7.5 hours but I am still very tired. Tomorrow is my day off but I have to run errands. I just want to relax.

They burn out their help and then they over use the ones who remain. You cannot get on like this for long.

@acrogodess Oh, I know. I am also aware that you need the hours to save for getting the kids. I hope you rest well.

I know, but I cannot switch jobs until the kids have finally joined me in NC. It's hard to request time off at a new job and I've been at this one since May.

I don't blame you for not answering the phone. They shouldn't work you like that.

@acrogodess Do you have a long commute? It should be against the law to work like that or even be expected to.

@just4him my normal commute home is a 15 minute bus ride, but the bus runs either once an hour or twice an hour depending on the time of day so I generally have to wait for it anywhere from 20 minutes to 50 minutes when I get off work. When I work late, that bus doesn't run at night so I have to take a bus to the transportation center and then catch a train to get home plus walk 5 minutes from the train station home

Normally I'm okay with working long days, but a 12 hour shift from 9am to 10pm (they give me an hour break) is different than working 430am (or 5am) until 10pm with only a one hour break. Plus my commute and it's like I don't even get to sleep. Ugh

Oh dear. You are really going to extra mile for them. Also so true -- its dining, not emergency room or something. I hope you get some more respect soon

If they hire too many employees, I won't get enough hours. If they don't hire anyone, I'll be getting all the hours and exhausting myself into an early grave.

Wow! Can they not just give you like a 9 hour shift with an hour lunch? Are they purposely doing it that way so you dont get paid breaks???

@Daelii different states have different rules regarding labor. Some states have paid time and a half for anything over 8 hours in a day. I've never worked like that. Anywhere I've worked : NY, NJ and NC included it's time and a half for anything after 40 hours.

We don't get paid breaks anyway. We clock out for half hour breaks. During a long day, I get two half hour breaks for a total of an hour.

@acrogodess that's so strange! Is it just different in that state? Where I use to work 4 hour shifts had no breaks. 5 hours had 15 minute paid break. 6 hours was paid break and off the clock lunch half hour. 8 hours or more extra breaks

Wow that sounds frustrating for sure. That is such a long shift. Do they do that too all employees? Are they super short staffed? Either way that is no excuse for such a long day.

No, they don't do it to all employees. Right now I know how to open and close the front end, but one coworker doesn't close at all and is off Friday and Saturday. The other opens only Monday through Thursday. One girl went away on maternity leave and the other cashiers are mid shifts so they've never been trained to open or close at all. The other 2 closers are fairly unreliable soooo apparently it's like hey let's call in Lissette. She'll do it and last night I was like NO the heck I won't. LOL I'm so tired I can barely think straight right now.
