What shape is your dining table?

So today I’m wondering what shape your dining room table is. We used to have a rectangular one which could extend if we needed more length. We tend to have quite a few for a meal from time to time, either for a birthday, anniversary or when we have one of our house concerts. Vince loves to cook but didn’t like our table as, by the time you set it for six or eight there wasn’t much room left down the centre for dishes. We often put the food down the centre of the table and let people serve themselves. Or we might ‘plate’ the meat and let them add their own vegetables, rice or whatever. So now we have a square table which holds more platters in the centre. However, this can involve a lot of passing back and forth so we now have a large lazy susan in the middle. In the photo is a group of friends who came to my 60th birthday party. Their husbands are all standing back hopeing there is enough for everyone. The lady on the left is a retired bursar (school administrator) like my husband; third from the left is a friend who, with her husband, built their own yacht and sailed the world for six years, and fourth from the left is the friend who walked the Bibbulman Track, a 1,000 kilometre walk from Perth in Western Australia to Albany on the south coast. I have written several posts about her exploits.

I currently have a round table. My ex-wife has a square table. When we were married, we had a long rectangle table.

@JudyEv Round, square, triangle...if I have to, I'll squeeze people into every last available space around a table! haha

@enlightenedpsych2 haha, that's funny, because I would do the same! And have done the same! I've had people sitting on the floor, on my couches, on folding chairs, etc. Where've I could squeeze them in! I'm doing great Erica, how have you been? I go through spurts where I'm extremely active on this site, and then spurts where I am so busy at work that I go several days at a time without stopping by myLot. But I'm still alive and kicking! haha

Round tables are good. You can squish people in around it.

You have quite the gathering there- I always had a rectangular table but if I had a buffet-style I would kind of arrange the dishes in the kitchen. Hey I don't see any stodge- there--Guess you're saving it for Winter parties!

@MarymargII The legs fold up and we store them in the shed. They are not terribly small. They will seat three each side but again they are quite narrow. Here's a photo of one

Ours is circular but extends out so middle is square with ends being circular. That photo just makes me want to say Aussie, Aussie, Aussie . Hey, I had fun there when deployed in the Marines. Fun fact, punk rock loves to say oi, oi, oi which think means the same thing.

@JudyEv Love that so much, really great people we have with some jackals, but we all working on that I would think. Such a nice bond we have. This young ladY played the bag pipes and I almost cried. She thought it was for celebration and Think she did not know and I forgot that it is also about bravery and loss, but punk rock has been also playing it a different way as life. Was very confusing for me, but neat to see regardless.

Our son has one like that. It is very useful to have one that will extend. Sometimes at sports events or celebrations, someone might yell out Aussie, Aussie, Aussie and everyone will then go oi, oi, oi.

We have a big rectangular table, well we have two, one on the ground floor, in front of the kitchen and a bigger one downstairs in the room where there is the fireplace. It is that one that we use for parties.

We have a heap of tables mostly because of the concerts that we have. As well as our dining table, we have two trestle tables that we use for coffee during the interval at the concert and two smaller oval ones that usually seem needed as well. One has the food on it and the other might have the merchandise if the band is selling CDs or T-shirts or whatever,

You have some interesting friends! We have a square table which has two leaves to extend into a rectangle. At Easter we had family over so I bought (99p on ebay) another table of the same dimensions so I could extend both end to end and that way it was easy to seat 14 of us, although there was a lot of passing dishes back and forth. I was surprised at how difficult it was to find a table of exactly the same width and the same height; got a bargain in the end but I had to drive about an hour each way to pick it up! A large round table might be better but wouldn't fit in our dining room.

@JudyEv It was (is) an Ikea table, not real wood (which I would have chosen given the choice) but since the same table is £130 new I think I will sell this one again when I find something better, even if I only sell it for a fiver! Incidentally the other table which we already had we actually found in the garage when we bought our last house, that one is real wood, 1930s I think; we cleaned it up and I am part-way through restoring it as the polish is a bit worn but it's otherwise OK.
IKEA BJURSTA Extendable table Oak veneer 90/129/168x90 cm 2 pull-out leaves included.

Our dining room table is round. As such it seats four. We add a leaf to expand it to six. When we have a crowd...we use folding banquet tables (4 of them). We will have a small crowd at Christmas....23.

Our son's table is much like that. Round, seats four and expands to an oblong. We often put the food on the square table and sit down at two foldaway trestle-type tables.

In the picture the mayonnaise and other things are sitting on a circular white piece of wood which will turn so once someone has served themselves the whole thing revolves and can be turned around so the items are in front of the next person.
