Sourcing out a wholesale

So for a while now the prospect of jumping on the work from home bandwagon has truly inspired me to try new things. I've made Bath salts for relatively cheap but struggling to sell them locally. I then tried sugar scrub, insanely easy and cheap to make but again I've hit a wall trying to sell it. My next venture is going to be scented candles/wax melts. The only trouble being that the cheapest way of acquiring the wax is through wholesale, I don't own a business and can't afford to declare that I do unless I was making money first. Does anyone know a way of bypassing a wholesale for starting up? As the ones I seem to find, the delivery cost far out weighs the initial material cost. Is it even worth it?
