What is your per month salary?

It is generally said that a man should not be asked about his salary and a woman should not be asked about her age. Some inquisitive people are very curious to know how much do we earn per month. They would brazenly ask the direct question - "What is your salary". I also face this situation many a times, I simply brush aside the question or simply tell my approximate carry home salary. How do you feel if someone asks you about your monthly salary? Do you feel offended or do you take it easy and immediately reveal your salary figures?. Do you ask about salary of others? well, the title stated so, though it didn't stated where it may come from but it didn't also point where. And because I want to escape from my offline work so I resorted to mylot he he.

Switzerland is a very private country, this is not a question that anyone would ask and anyway nobody would reply to such a question. My husband has never been asked in Europe, he was asked in the United States by people we do not even know, he simply replied "none of your business".

It is interesting to hear that in Switzerland asking about one's salary is considered rude and generally no one asks or tells about his salary. I am surprised to hear that in US even strangers could dare to ask about salary.

@LadyDuck It sounds strange to me that in US, people ask personal questions to strangers. It looks rude to me to ask question about one's salary. It is good to hear that in Europe people generally do not ask such personal questions.

@dpk262006 In the US people tend to ask you where you are from, what do you do for a living, how much you make. We have not the habit to ask those questions to strangers in Europe.

I actually don't really mind when people ask me about my salary, though I also know it's kinda impolite to ask others about it, so I don't ask others about it. I am also fine to tell others about my salary, but I don't reveal my husband's.

@dpk262006 It's because it's his privacy, I don't think I have the right to disclose his, unless I have asked for his permission. It doesn't matter whether he's earning high or low.

@kaka135 Yes, you are right that without his permission, it will not be prudent to disclose his salary.

It means that you do not shy away and make disclosure about your salary, however, you don't ask others about their salary. What makes you not reveal your husband's salary? Is he earning very higher salary?

Sometimes I am also asked, but I do not like telling it so much. However now I am experienced with this question and tell whatever I am ready to tell only. BTW I know age of many girls.

You seemingly don't like if someone asks you about your salary and you frown upon it. It is interesting to know that you know age of many girls.

@yugocean When you work in HR Division or someone known to you works there, you could access one's personal data/details.

@dpk262006 I worked temporary in Bill, and after it I have friends in Admin as well. But not sure if their certificate age is real. Few girls as friend told me real because I can understand Astrology.

It's considered a sensitive question here so no I don't ask people about their salary.

It is wiser on your part that you do not ask others about their salary. What if someone asks about your salary? How do you react?

@cahaya1983 If it is a stranger or an acquaintance, we could just tell them ''no comments'' but if it is a close relative, it becomes a difficult situation and we just cannot be rude with them.

@dpk262006 Just tell them "no comment", I suppose. So far no one has asked me.

I would never ask someone their salary but I would freely tell them mine as it is a matter of public record and can be easily looked up online.

It is wiser on your part to not to ask about anyone's salary. . Yes, you are right that in some of the organisation details of salary of employee(s) are available on website/public domain, in that case one could tell about one's salary.

I always hesitate to ask salary of a person I just take interest in knowing his/her position and probably length of service.

I think you show a mature attitude if you do not ask a person about his/her salary. I feel asking about one's position could also be a tricky issue, specially when the person is not on a higher post.

Yes, it is personal and normally should not be asked. Do you ask others about their salary or if others ask about your salary how do you react?

I know in some cultures it is okay to ask but Australia isn't one of them. We would dodge the question.

It is good that you dodge the question. In India also it is not considered good to ask about someone's salary. One of my parental aunt (who has since retired from service) is very keen to know about my salary. Every time she meets me, she would ask - "What is your salary?" and I would think for few minutes about my reply.

I consider asking for salary is against courtesy. So if somebody asks I will ignore and give a vague answer. Also I do not ask anyone about hi or her salary. Why would anybody want to know that in the first place

As a respect for such personal matters, i do not directly ask how much is a persons salary but rather ask him/her if he is ever being paid at a minimum wage. :)
