The small state of Delaware was the first of the original 13 state of the Union. For this reason its nickname is the “First” or the “Diamond State”. It was named after the original Governor of Virginia, Thomas West, Baron De La Warr. The capital is Dover and the state flower is the peach blossom.
Another of the original states is Maryland located in the middle of the Eastern Seaboard. This state was named after Queen Henrietta Maria the wife of King Charles I. This is the state where you’ll find the traditional boundary between the North and the South. Its nickname is the “Free State” and the capital is Annapolis. Its flower is the black-eyed susan.
When it came to creating the capital of the United States Congress chose the District of Columbia. It was George Washington who helped choose this site. Therefore the capital Washington, D.C. is named after him. It sits prominently on the Potomac River. The city was built with land taken from both Maryland and Virginia. The flower is the American beauty rose. When it comes to the capital of the U.S. it is best to remember that it was a city that was built and it’s not part of any state.
